Here’s a wonderful example of the Gradual Release Model for a writing lesson.
ESOL teacher Reem Alnatour at Alexander displays an excellent example of implementing the Gradual Release Model to teach about paragraphs for her 2nd grade Pull-Out group.
"I DO " During this component, the teacher explicitly models and thinks aloud as they are teaching the concept. The teacher provides direct instruction, establishes goals and purpose.
Reem states the Learning Target and Language Objectives
She explicitly teaches about a paragraph
She uses a graphic organizer to show the organization of a paragraph
Reem uses gestures To model the 3 parts of a paragraph
Reem uses visuals to visualize the concept of a paragraph
And uses visuals to explain the parts of a paragraph
"We Do" This is the Guided Practice and interactive instruction with the teacher and student working together. The teacher checks, prompts, clues and provides additional modeling if needed.
Reem works with students to sort the topic sentence and one supporting sentence of the paragraph.
"You All Do" (Collaborative Learning)-This is where the students collaborate and work together to practice the skills. The teacher moves among groups/partner to clarify any confusion and provides support.
"You Do" (Independent Practice)-This is when the students work independently to complete the task and the teacher provides feedback, evaluates and determines the student's level of understanding.
