Who doesn't love an AMAZING Resource?
We would like to thank Tami Uria, Greenville Academy for sharing this resource. Here’s what she has to say:
You have probably already heard about this, but I wanted to share, just in case! I think several of our teachers would love to know. This looks AMAZING! I'm so excited about it, I signed up to volunteer (they have a variety of ways to do so) and they responded the next day! I'd love to help them spread the word! This is HUGE for our communities, students, and families!
Oh! And the website has tons of teacher resources that pair with the books by authors who will be presenting!
Reminder: ESOL Professional Development Sessions
Our monthly ESOL PDs have been divided so that everyone can leave school buildings in time for COVID 19 cleaning processes and procedures. Our ESOL General Session is the second Tuesday of each month. Our ESOL Instructional Coaches provide PD on the third Tuesday of each month. For the Month of November, our General Session is November 10th and the IC sessions are November 17th. Looking forward to "seeing" all of you soon on Zoom!
Updates: ESOL Open Office Hours
We are here to support you! We are excited to hold open time each week to support you. You do not have to sign-up! You simply enter the Zoom link if you have questions or need assistance. Please note some sessions are specific to New ESOL Teachers. Each of the ICs have an assigned mentor group. If you are a new ESOL Teacher, please see the chart below to know who is your support person.
IMPORTANT CHANGE: Elementary ICs (Christine Ware and Latoi Gibson) will ONLY hold Office Hours for two more weeks (October 30th and November 6th) since all Elementary Schools will be on the 5 day a week schedule. Tanya Franca, Kerry Culpepper, and the Secondary ICs (Tonya Benjamin and Blanca O'Connor) will continue to hold Friday Office Hours. Any changes with the schedule will be communicated.
ALL ESOL Teachers are welcome to attend all other open office hours to receive needed support!

Reading and Literacy A Lifelong Successful Approach
Literacy Instruction for English Language Learners is for everyone who teaches English language learners to read and write. We will explore important research findings about ELL students into evidence based, effective classroom practice, and applications for reading in L2 (English). This session helps teachers:
learn more about the ELL students in their classroom,
support the emergence and early development of English literacy skills in nonnative speakers,
help English learners reach their full potential as readers and writers,
guide ELL students as they develop academic language and literacy in English
connect reading and writing strongly to promote growth in each
assess the literacy skills of English language learners and use that information to plan responsive instruction using Nat-Geo.
Highlights
All English Proficiency Codes MUST Be Entered!
We have now PASSED the funding date which was the 45th day, October 27th! We still have 347 AWs in my pull October 29th!!!! Remind your Clerks to enter a 9 for students that have ALL English on the Home Language Survey (HLS). We are currently using the EL student numbers to plan for ESOL Teacher allocations and FTEs for the remainder of the year and the 2020-2021 school year! We need these 347 AWs with Proficiency Codes to increase our allocations and give an accurate projection of need for each school. Please get the English Proficiency Codes entered!!!!!
Reminders and Clarifications
Lexia Core 5 Update
We want to again thank you for your patience in fully implementing Lexia Core5. From an update we received this morning, it looks like we are very close to having our kindergarteners loaded into the program. Hopefully with that fix taking place, it will also update students to include those who were not initially loaded.
After we hear an update that everything is ready to go, I will then follow-up with teachers whose accounts are still not created. Just bear with us a little longer as there are lots of moving parts and many hands working behind the scenes to get this program fully up and running for everyone.
Google Form for Recording Attempts to Screen
Don’t forget to document your attempts to contact families to schedule students for English Proficiency Screening.
If you have a student for whom you have contacted the family twice and your administrator has attempted to contact and schedule the student as well, please use the following google form to document your attempts. After filling out the google form, please code the student AW until further notice.

Resending ILAP PDFs for Signature
We are aware that when sending out the ILAPs more than once (submitting them to teachers for signatures at different times) creates more than one ILAP document and signatures are on different pages. This is something that our office was not trained on or was made aware by the company how that occurs or the ways to prevent it. FOR THIS YEAR, IT IS NOT REQUIRED TO HAVE ALL THE SIGNATURES ON THE SAME PAGE. As long as one of the ILAPs is signed, it will be accessible to others to see the ILAP and implement it. ALL teachers must sign the ILAPs, but they do not have to be on the same page for this year. For compliance purposes, we can all go in and see the multiple files to check for signatures when needed.
For those of you that have not gotten that far in the ILAP process or would like to get all of your signatures on the same page and have to submit again to a teacher, Please use the simple directions below:
These directions ensure that the prior signatures remain in your document when sending to someone who has not yet signed.
When you need to resend a document to a recipient, the process should be done like this:
1. Open the Collaboration portal
2. Locate the document and open it.
3. Click the dropdown in the upper right corner and select Manage Recipients.
4. Remove the recipient you are resending it to.
5. Add the recipient back into the document.
