Week of September 28th

Upcoming Professional Development

Monthly ESOL Meetings/Professional Development (PD)

We want to be sure that all ESOL teachers have an opportunity to attend our Monthly ESOL Meetings.  We have adjusted the the times and days to better accommodate the closing of buildings at 5:00pm for COVID cleaning and sanitation.  These new times and dates will begin in October.

We have divided our Monthly Meetings and PD in half.  The second Tuesday of each month will be our General ESOL Session and the times will run Elementary, 3:00-3:45 and Secondary, 4:00-4:45.  Topic based professional development sessions will be the third Tuesday of each month at the same times (Elementary, 3:00-3:45 and Secondary, 4:00-4:45).  We will record the sessions and links will be provided in the current week's Newsletter each time.

The Sessions are already created for sign-up in the Professional Development Portal! Please use the link below for quick access!

Don't Forget! ESOL Open Office Hours

We are here to support you!  We are excited to hold open time each week to support you.  You do not have to sign-up!  You simply enter the Zoom link if you have questions or need assistance.  Please note some sessions are specific to New ESOL Teachers.  Each of the ICs have an assigned mentor group.  If you are a new ESOL Teacher, please see the chart below to know who is your support person.

Reminders and Clarifications

Do you have something to celebrate?  I hope we all do!  Please share with the team so we can celebrate together!  Teams that celebrate together, accelerate together!

Pleas complete the Google Form with celebrations!  This is ongoing throughout the year!  I will add them every Thursday in our Newsletter!

All English Proficiency Codes MUST Be Entered!

We cannot have any blanks in the Power School field for English Proficiency.  The students' language proficiency code must be correct and entered.  Make sure you share the proficiency codes with your Power School clerks for all BLANKS.  If you already shared with your Power School Clerks, check with them to be sure they were all entered.  Bring them "banana bread" (favorite treat) to support them and keep them happy ;) Remember the proficiency fields determine FUNDING and ESOL FTEs (number of teachers).  We had over 910 blanks in my pull September 28th!!!! The drop dead date for funding is the 45th day.  That is OCTOBER 27th!  NOTE:  In your English Proficiency field you should NOT have ANY of the following codes:  CM, W, 6P, 7P, or BLANKS

How do I know if I have any blanks?  Run a non 9 in GCSource or ask your Power School clerk to run a non 9 report.  The directions on how to run a non 9 yourself in GCSource is below.  The non 9 report in GCSource includes LOTS of important EL info. in one report.  Always good to run it often and compare with your clerk.

Grading for Newcomers during eLearning

We know grading for Newcomers can be difficult during eLearning.  We have provided guidance in our ESOL Expectations document that is linked in the district's eLearning Expectations document.  To clarify and add more support, Tanya has created a video explanation for administrators.  This has been shared with principals this week.  The links below are the documents and videos.  You are welcome to share it freely with content teachers and use it as a guide.  Thank you for all you do!

Check the ENRICH tab in our Newsletter for IMPORTANT updates and information!!!

Kerry Culpepper, LEAD ESOL Teacher, has add more information this week! We are moving forward.  Please reach out for help as needed!

Questions Concerning District and State Testing Sections in ILAP

Kerry and I would like to help streamline as much as possible to help you!  Remember we are learning the program right along side you! We are in this together!

For students with accommodations for District and State Testing

For District Testing, please add the name of the test, participation (yes) and then add the allowable accommodations for the specific assessment that the student needs

For State Testing, add the name of the test and the allowable accommodations for the specific assessment that  the student needs

For students with no accommodations for district and state testing:

For District Testing, please list the test and the participation (yes) then write none if the student has no accommodations.

For State Testing, please list the test and the chart will populate blank for students that have no accommodations.

Virtual Students in Enrich

All non-exited ELs that are enrolled in the K-8 Virtual Academy are assigned to a Virtual ESOL teacher.  The Virtual ESOL teachers will complete the ENRICH process for their own students.  If you are a Face to Face (home school) ESOL teacher and you began the process for an EL enrolled in the virtual program, do not continue.  Leave the student as is!  The Virtual ESOL teachers can edit and continue on in the process. All ESOL teachers have "Administrative Editing" rights.  So, corrections, changes, and additions can be made without issues.

Remember MONITORED ELs in the K-8 Virtual Academy, their ENRICH process will be completed by the HOME SCHOOL ESOL teacher.  The only virtual monitored students covered by the K-8 Virtual ESOL teachers are from their original home school.  Here is the direct list: Sarah Smoke for Mitchell Road, Karen Pendergrass for Brushy Creek, Tory Pennington for Simpsonville, Rebecca Valencia for Alexander, Anne Howell for Armstrong, Cristina Sims for Tanglewood, Donna Confere for Greer Middle, and Marc Shaduk for Lakeview.  If you have any questions, please reach out to Kerry or Tanya!

Greenville County Testing Calendar

To assist you with determining which assessments the ELs will take during the 2020-2021 school year, the below link is the calendar.  There is a column that indicates the grade level and then a column for the name of the assessment.  This will help you with your accommodation section in the ILAP.

You also need the list of STCs for each school.  This will give you the reference for who to contact in your buildings concerning assessments and accommodations.  NOTE:  VIRTUAL ESOL teachers will need to contact the STC in the brick in motor buildings for their 2nd grade students that need accommodations for the GT Test - COGAT. Once ILAPs are created, STCs and schools can check testing accommodations themselves.  You will only have to provide this for your 2nd grade students for GT testing since the ILAPs are not completed yet.

Below is the current MAP accommodation document for ELs that was shared with STCs at the beginning of the year!  This might help you with the assessment section in the ILAP as well!

Updated ESOL Personnel List

This is ever-changing with the needs of our students and teachers.  Please save this link and check periodically as needed.  Sonya League is updating this constantly as we have changes.  Thanks!

W-APT and WIDA Screeners with Virtual Academy ELs

All ELs without a proficiency score must be screened.  If the students are enrolled in the K-8 Virtual Academy, they still must be administered a screener.  That must be done Face to Face at the home school.  When you screen a K-8 Virtual Academy EL, please complete the Google Form below for each student. This will signal our office to assign the EL to their virtual ESOL teacher.  Thanks so much!

ESOL teachers must reach out to the parents and schedule the students to come into the building to administer the screener.  If you have issues please reach out to your building administrators.  A process for documenting when parents refuse to bring students to the building will be shared in next week's newsletter after it has been shared with principals.

IMPORTANT Parent Resource

We have been collecting a list of  "How to Video" needs for parents.  We wanted to be sure we had instructional videos on how to access Google Classroom, How to use See Saw, and how to access Parent Back Pack.

We got a list started and asked for feedback from various stakeholders of where to start!  Gloria, Tonya, and Blanca worked tirelessly to create a solid library of videos in Spanish that you can use with your parents.

Please feel free to share with your admin and have them linked to your school websites as well.  Use them during instruction and share with content teachers!  The how to access Parent BackPack in Spanish is already linked on the Greenville County Website!

This is a start!  We will keep searching and creating according to need.  If you have more ideas, of how to videos that are needed, please e-mail your lists to Gloria Hackenberg, ESOL Office Parent Specialist, ghackenb@greenville.k12.sc.us
