Incorporating Speaking in Newcomer Lessons
The student's learned school vocabulary words from the unit and I used Flip Grid as the speaking tool for students to practice speaking. The lesson shows direct instruction of how students could use speaking frames to describe school tools then continue to the independent activity of recording themselves describing school tools.
You should do this type of speaking lesson at least once a week during your Newcomer Pull Out. Remember to have the students turn-and-talk before they do it independently if you're doing it once a week!
These types of speaking lessons could be pushed out in Google Classroom during e-learning days or during the weeks you're doing ACCESS testing.
This is a quick and easy way to make sure our newcomers are getting that Speaking practice!
(Note: Try not to use the same task you used in the direct instruction for the independent practice. I forgot I was holding a blue pen during my direct instruction and it was the same in the independent practice!
