Scheduling for the 2023/2024 school year will begin soon
Level placement recommendations are used in English, mathematics, science, social studies, foreign language, dual enrollment courses, and Advanced Placement courses. The underlying goals and purposes are provided below. Freshmen are recommended for, or placed in levels, based upon a combination of the following criteria:
FMCSD interim assessments (FAST and/or MAP).
Past academic performance.
Teacher recommendations.
Standardized assessments (ISASP)
Prerequisites for courses may exist based upon the above.
After direct recommendations, a student and their family may select their courses. Students are strongly encouraged to consult with their teachers and counselor when considering a level change.
Please note that course levels for certain fine arts courses are determined through a different process involving placement auditions.
HONORS/ACCELERATED COURSES
These courses enable students to prepare for and pursue college-level studies while they are still in high school. Students who complete honors/accelerated level courses may have the opportunity to earn college credit or placement through AP exams.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) COURSES
Students have the opportunity to complete advanced placement courses in the many of the content areas. The content of these courses is determined by the College Board. Students who score well on the exams may be awarded college credit in most of the nation’s colleges and universities. In assessing a student’s application, many colleges also look favorably on courses designated as AP since these courses represent more rigorous content than the standard high school curriculum. Students are encouraged to investigate the AP policy of the college of their choice.
WEIGHTED GRADING
Weighted grading is used in the calculation of grade-point-average as it relates to class ranks. While both weighted and unweighted ranks will be calculated, the weighted class rank will be used in the determination of:
Class rank, including the determination of Valedictorian and Salutatorian.
Honor graduate distinctions.
Scholarship eligibility and determination.
