Alternative Programs
CREATIVE LEARNING CENTER (CLC)
Students needing an alternative educational environment at Fort Madison High School may apply to attend the Creative Learning Center. CLC operates on an alternative schedule based upon a student’s extenuating circumstances. Students may receive direct instruction at CLC, utilize online learning through Edmentum, or complete their learning in a combination of the two. Students attending CLC will graduate with the FMHS seniors. Graduation requirements for students attending CLC shall be identical to those of FMHS.
Students who wish to attend the Creative Learning Center must establish an extenuating circumstance to their counselor, who will petition administration for admittance if the circumstance is valid. Students are not typically admitted into the Creative Learning Center if:
They are compulsory and required to attend school by state and federal law.
Attendance for the student has fallen below the 95% threshold in the student’s high school career.
The student’s behavioral records indicate they are not capable of working independently.
The student is on track to graduate with their class.
Administrative discretion may be applied to any prospective CLC student.
ONLINE COURSEWORK (EDMENTUM)
FMHS students will be permitted to take online classes when requested to allow them to fit other regular coursework into their schedule. Enrollment in these classes will be on a case-by-case basis. The following criteria shall be known:
Edmentum coursework for extension will be completed on a student’s own time. Periods during the school day will not be arranged into a student’s schedule for the completion of Edmentum coursework.
Students may seek assistance from FMHS instructors for their Edmentum coursework, but that time must be scheduled before or after school hours.
Students must complete Edmentum coursework in the same fiscal year (July 1-June 31) in which they began the class.
Students are required to notify the guidance office when they have completed an Edmentum course so that it can be verified and added to the student’s transcript and historical grades.
Credit for an Edmentum online course will be awarded on a student’s transcript with a descriptor indicating the course was taken online.
If a student does not complete an Edmentum course in the allotted time, the class will be recorded as an “F” on the student’s transcript and recorded as a credit attempt, affecting their G.P.A.
FMCSD-issued chromebooks will not be available during the students’ summer break. If students are enrolled in an Edmentum course at that time, a personal device must be utilized in those efforts.
All school rules/regulations with regard to academic dishonesty, plagiarism, and other curricular expectations will apply to Edmentum coursework.
