Health 2 will assist students in developing healthy eating strategies and in examining the effectiveness of various fitness and exercise opportunities. In addition, students will develop skills to reduce the chance of acquiring a communicable or noncommunicable disease and to learn about tactics to help them avoid drug use. Topics such as environmental and consumer health, as well as health related occupations will be investigated. Topics in Health 2 will be researched in much greater detail than in the health course taken in the 7th and 8th grade years.



HUMAN PERFORMANCE

OPEN TO: 10, 11, 12

PREREQUISITE: 1 PE COURSE

This course will be an investigation of current issues and trends in the fields of human performance and sport management, and how these issues and trends may impact the future. An emphasis will be placed upon developmental theory, investigation, and gathering of data, analysis and evaluation, and research reporting as they relate to research in health, human performance, and recreation.



INTERSCHOLASTIC OFFICIATING (IN ALIGNMENT WITH THE NATIONAL FEDERATION OF HIGH SCHOOLS - NFHS)

In the Interscholastic Officiating course, students will cover the introductory skills and concepts individuals will use or will need to learn as an official. The course will cover officiating basics, the science behind good officiating, the art of officiating, and how one can combine these skills into a satisfying vocation. Students will be provided a solid base knowledge of what to expect and how to improve oneself as an official.



INTRO TO COACHING

OPEN TO: 11, 12

PREREQUISITE: 2 PE COURSES

GRADUATION REQUIREMENT: NO

CAPACITY: 30

This course focuses on the various responsibilities of a coach and the skills needed to successfully fill this important position. Throughout the course, students will explore various coaching models and leadership styles, sports nutrition and sports psychology, as well as safety, conditioning, and cross-training. Students will learn effective communication, problem-solving, and decision making skills. The course will also introduce students to game strategy, tactical strategy, skills-based training, and coaching ethics. Guest speakers will be a significant component of this course.



INTRO TO KINESIOLOGY

OPEN TO: 11, 12

PREREQUISITE: C OR BETTER IN BIOLOGY

This course will introduce skills and strategies involving sports and activity. A foundation for lifetime activity will be stressed. Students will demonstrate knowledge of, and show competency in, motor skills, movement patterns and strategies needed to perform a variety of physical activities. There is a strong emphasis on individual fitness, exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor learning, and anatomy.



LIFETIME ACTIVITIES

The Lifetime Activities course is designed to develop a foundation of skills, knowledge, and personal attributes, which will enable students to successfully participate in lifetime physical activities, provide motivation for continued improvement, and establish a pattern of physical activity for a lifetime. A contemporary examination of effects of lifestyle, wellness, and health promotion on the individual will be emphasized.
