COMMON PROCEDURES IN HEALTHCARE

PREREQUISITE: NONE

This course will introduce students to the essential skills and concepts needed in an emergency medical situation.  Emergency medical procedures, as well as legal and ethical responsibilities will be addressed.  

NOTE: students who successfully meet the requirement of the American Heart Association will become certified in CPR/AED through this course.



HEALTHCARE OCCUPATION EXPLORATION

OPEN TO: 9, 10, 11, 12

PREREQUISITE: NONE

GRADUATION REQUIREMENT: NO

CAPACITY: 20


This course will explore the Health Science Careers.  These five pathways include therapeutic services, diagnostic services, health information, support services, and biotechnology research and development.  Students will have the opportunity to speak with individuals who hold careers in each of the pathways.



HEALTHCARE SYSTEMS

OPEN TO: 9, 10, 11, 12

PREREQUISITE: HEALTHCARE OCCUPATION EXPLORATION, COMMON PROCEDURES IN HEALTHCARE

This course will focus on how the health system functions ate the department level, organizational level, and overall healthcare environment.  Students will understand individual and team responsibilities in the healthcare setting.  Students will take experiences from the Healthcare Occupation Exploration to see how it fits into the overall system and apply knowledge learned to solve a real life health or medical problem.



INTRODUCTION TO PATIENT CARE 1

OPEN TO: 9, 10, 11, 12

PREREQUISITE: HEALTHCARE SYSTEMS

GRADUATION REQUIREMENT: NO

This course will introduce students to essential skills and concepts required to be successful in patient care.  A focus on patient care skills will be the emphasis of this course.  Example: therapeutic and diagnostic career pathways.



INTRODUCTION TO PATIENT CARE 2

OPEN TO: 10, 11, 12

PREREQUISITE: INTRODUCTION TO PATIENT CARE 1

GRADUATION REQUIREMENT: NO

CAPACITY: 20


This course will introduce students to essential skills and concepts required to be successful in a patient care setting.  Some of the skills learned will also be valuable in other health science careers.



TRANSITION TO THE HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONAL

OPEN TO: 12

PREREQUISITE: HEALTHCARE SYSTEMS

GRADUATION REQUIREMENT: NO

CAPACITY: 20


This course will give students insight on safety and employment laws in the workplace and how to improve employability skills to secure a job in healthcare.  Resume building workshops, teambuilding, professionalism, and the role of social media in finding the perfect job will be some of the topics covered.  In addition, students will have the potential opportunity depending on career choice for a limited job shadowing experience and/or work based simulated learning project in their chosen career.
