Course description:
Community and Family Studies is an interdisciplinary course drawing upon related components of family studies, sociology, developmental psychology and students’ general life experiences. The course aims to develop in each student the ability to manage resources and take action to support the needs of individuals, groups, families and communities in Australian society.
Year 11 Course topics:
Resource management: basic concepts; wellbeing; communication; decision making.
Individuals and groups: group formation; roles; relationships; leadership; causes of conflict; conflict resolution.
Families and communities: influences on socialisation; family structure; change in families and communities; support networks.
Year 12 Course topics:
Research methodology: methodologies; conducting and interpreting research; presenting data; terminology; ethics in research.
Groups in context: identifying specific groups within the community; identifying issues of concern of specific groups; researching community groups.
Parenting and caring: becoming parents and carers; influences on caring and parenting relationships; support for parents and carers.
HSC options: Social Impact of Technology; Individuals and Work.
Skills you will master:
Capacity to manage their own learning (goal setting, time management, etc).
Desire to continue learning in formal or informal settings after school.
Capacity to work together with others (teamwork and communication skills).
Respect for the social and cultural diversity of Australian society.
Empathy and understanding of groups at risk in our community.

The successful completion of CFS Stage 6 may provide TAFE Credit Transfer opportunities in Community Services, Health, Tourism & Hospitality, Recreation, and Sport and Recreation course.

Counselling, etc.
Research skills developed during the course would also be beneficial in many fields such as law and medical.
Possible learning experiences/excursions:
Students undertake an Independent Research Project, which contributes to the school-based assessment. Visitors from community organisations or visits to community events or organisations may also help reinforce learning for this course.
