FMS focus: Two-hand strike
Learning intention
Students are developing proficiency in the two-hand strike.
Success criteria.
Student has:
Stands side-on to target area.
Eyes focused on the ball throughout the strike.
Hands next to each other, bottom hand matches the front foot.
When proficient in above, student has:
Steps towards target area with front foot.
Hips then shoulders rotate forward.
Ball contact made on front foot with straight arms.
Follows through with bat around the body.
Explicit teaching of the two-hand strike
Model the skill:
Model the two-hand strike to students while explaining the movements needed to effectively strike:
Stand side-on.
Keep your eyes on the ball.
Position your hands so they match your feet.
Use a big swing.
Step forward and swing.
Contact the ball with straight arms.
Swing and follow through.
Guided practice with immediate teacher feedback:
Students work in groups of four spread out in a defined grass area with three markers, a batting tee, bat and three balls. One person in the group is the batter; the other three are the fielders. The students take turns to hit the three balls off a tee:
for height
for distance
between two markers set up by the fielders.
Skill development games
FMS focus activity - French cricket
Skill focus: Two-hand strike
Equipment: 1 bat and soft ball per group
How to play:
The batter stands with feet together and holds the bat in front of the legs.
Fielders throw the ball underarm and the batter hits in any direction.
The batter is out if the ball is caught on the full or they are hit on the legs.
FMS consolidation activity - Underarm return relay
Skill focus: Catching
Equipment: Tennis balls, marker cones
How to play: Players run to a point, return and on the way back pick up a ball and throw it underarm to the teammate next in line. This pattern continues. (Play with 4 or more).
Mark a starting line and a midway line, and place a distant marker to run around (turning point).
Form teams of 4 - 6 players.
Place the ball on the midway line.
Player 1 runs around the turning point and back towards the team, picking up the ball on the midway line.
The ball is thrown underarm to player 2, player 1 joins the end of the team.
Player 2 runs to the midway line, deposits the ball and continues to the turning point, then runs back, picks up the ball and throws it underarm to player 3.
Continue until player 1 is again at the head of the line.
Modified small-sided games
It's game time!
Teams play each other in the game outlined below.
Runners v Passers
Equipment: 4 balls per player, hitting tee, marker cones, bats
How to play: A batting team and a fielding team. The first batter hits the ball and the entire team runs around the markers. The fielders gather the ball and pass it to everyone in their team. When all the fielders have touched the ball, they call out “STOP!”
Using a tee, the ball is hit between B and C.
All batters attempt to run as a group to the finish position.
If the ball goes ‘wide’ (A-B or C-D), the shot is taken again.
Field the ball and then move onto the infield.
The ball is passed to each fielder using a nominated throw, eg. underarm throw.
Fielders must be at least 2 meters apart.
The last fielder to receive a pass calls out “STOP!”.
The ball is passed to the next batter.
Scoring:
Each batter to reach the finish line before ‘STOP!’ is called scores one point.
Players can be caught out – if they are, no points are scored
Reflection
2 stars and a wish
Ask students - what are 2 things you feel you did well today?
What are you going to try and improve on next week?
Students can answer reflection questions as a whole class, small group or in pairs.
