Territorial games gala day organisation
Gala day events
Fast start
Small-sided games
In the week prior to the gala-day, students may be given time to create signs to support their team at the gala-day.
Set-up playing area prior to the session..
Players participate in the games as a team.
Select a student from each team to be the team captain for the gala-day.
Fast start - Crusts and crumbs
Equipment: 8 markers (to set out playing area)
How to play:
Set out the playing area (25 students = approximately 25m x 25m).
Divide playing area in half and create an area (approximately 1m), called the 'no-go-zone'.
Divide students into pairs. Students line up along each line and face their partner across the no-go-zone.
The students on one line are called ‘crusts’ while their partners on the opposite line are called ‘crumbs’.
The teacher calls out either crusts or crumbs. If crusts are called, the students on that line need to run towards their baseline while their crumb partners chase and attempt to tag them.
After each round, students return to their line and await the teacher's call.
CHANGE IT!
Vary the starting positions (e.g. standing on one leg or crouching down).
Increase or decrease the distance to the baseline.
Small sided games
Guard the castle
Equipment: 15 footballs; 8 marker cones (4 colours)
Skill focus: Dodge
How to play: Guards in a line move sideways as they try to protect the castle from invasion. Invaders attempt to dodge through gaps in the guards’ defence to leave as many footballs as they can inside the castle within two minutes. Play in groups of 10 to 12.
Organise players into even teams of invaders and castle guards.
The castle guards stand three metres apart and can only move sideways on their line.
The invaders have two minutes to attempt to get past the guards and into the castle without being touched.
Once in the castle, the invader places their football on the ground then returns to their position around the boundary lines to collect a new ball.
The guards attempt to effect a touch on the invaders to send them to the dungeon.
To be released from the dungeon, invaders must throw their ball in the air, clap and catch it five times, then return to their starting position.
When ‘Time!’ is called, the invaders add up how many balls they left in the castle.
Once both teams have had a turn as invaders, the team with the highest score of balls in the castle wins.
Dodge the ball
Skill focus: Dodge
Equipment: Balls, cones to mark playing area
How to play: Players are divided into 2 teams separated by a ‘no-go’ barrier. The ball is rolled across the barrier. Students dodge to avoid being hit by the ball.
Use a basketball court or mark out an area with a centre line.
Students are divided into two teams and each team is given three balls.
When the whistle is blown, students roll the balls into the other team’s area trying to hit the other team below the knees.
Students should use the dodge to avoid the balls.
If students are hit by a ball they run around the outside of the area once and then move back onto the court.

Reflection
2 stars and a wish
Ask students - what are 2 things you feel you did well today?
What will you take away from the Net and court games that you can use for our next sport?
Students can answer reflection questions as a whole class, small group or in pairs.
