Gala day events
Fast start
Relays
In the week prior to the gala-day, students may be given time to create signs to support their team at the gala-day.
Set-up relay playing area prior to the session..
Players participate in the relay events as a team.
Select a student from each team to be the team captain for the gala-day.
Fast start - Bank, river, shore
Equipment: 8 markers (to set out playing area) and 4 markers (to set out the river).
How to play:
All students must line up along the 'river'.
Explain to students that the marked line to left of the 'river' is the bank and the line to the right of the 'river' is the shore.
The teacher calls out either river, bank or shore.
Students must run to get to the corresponding destination as fast as possible.
CHANGE IT!
Vary the size of the playing area.
Vary the starting positions. (e.g. standing on one leg, crouching down).
Perform different actions when reaching the destination (e.g. hop onto the bank, tuck jump on the river).
Modified small-sided games
Racquet Relay
Equipment: Cones, 1 racquet per player, 1 ball per group
How to play: Players start off in relay groups behind a starting line. Players balance a ball on their racquet, while weaving in and out of obstacles. When the hitting line is reached, the player uses the bat to hit the wall twice before returning with the ball balanced on the bat.
Forms groups of 4 players.
If players drop their ball, they pick up and continue.
On return, players must cross the start line and tag the next player.
The first team finished wins.
Footy squash
Equipment: Goal post marking tape, or Goal posts for each group, 1 racquet per group, 5 balls per group
How to play: Players aim to score by hitting a ball between goal posts (or targets on the wall). Each player will bounce the ball, to set up for themselves, before swinging. This is done in a ‘side-on’ stance position.
Form groups of 5-6 players.
Each player has five hits for goal.
6 points are scored for a goal between the centre posts, 1 point for a behind.
