FMS focus: Kick
Learning intention
Students are developing proficiency in the kick.
Success criteria.
Student has:
Eyes focused on the ball throughout the kick.
Non-kicking foot placed beside the ball.
When proficient in above, student has:
Forward and sideward swing of arm opposite kicking leg.
Bends knee of kicking leg at least 90 degrees during the back-swing.
Contacts ball with top of the foot (a ‘shoelace’ kick) or instep.
Kicking leg follows through high towards target area. .
Explicit teaching of the kick
Model the skill:
Model the kick to students while explaining the movements needed to effectively kick:
Keep your eyes on the ball.
Place your foot beside the ball before you kick.
Step forward and kick.
Swing the arm opposite to your kicking leg.
Swing your kicking leg back.
Follow through.
Guided practice with immediate teacher feedback:
Students work in pairs, with one ball for each pair. Students practise the following skills:
Kick a ball along the ground to a partner about five metres away. The partner stops it and kicks it back.
Low bounce the ball to a partner who attempts to kick it back. Change roles after a few turns.
Try to make as many continuous passes as possible, without the ball stopping or going out of control.
Independent practice:
Students work in groups of three in a line. Student one has the ball. Student one and student two keep the ball away from student three by kicking, dribbling and passing. If the ball is trapped the student who lost the ball changes places with the student in the middle. Depending on their skill levels, rotate the players’ positions after a set time period of time so everyone gets a fair go.
Skill development games
FMS consolidation activity - Caterpillar run
FMS: Kick
Equipment: 1-2 balls per group, marker cones
How to play: In small groups players pass a soccer ball in a zigzag pattern to progress the group up the playing space. Play in groups of 6 to 8.
Form pairs, then groups of 6 to 8 with one ball per group. (Depending on participant numbers the game can also be played in several smaller groups).
Players stand opposite their partner about 1 to 1.5 metres apart.
The ball starts at the beginning of one line.
On your signal, the first player kick passes the ball to their partner as they move off the line leading for it.
After passing the ball the first player runs to the end of their line.
The player now holding the ball kick passes it diagonally opposite to the next player leading for it, then they run to the end of their line.
Passing continues until the group has made it to the end of the court (or designated area).
Players can race against the clock or against other groups.
FMS focus activity - Football marbles
Equipment: 1 x football per student, marker cones
Skill focus: Kick
How to play: Players in pairs attempt to score as many ‘ball hits’ as they can in a row, by passing their football to make contact with their partner’s ball
Players in pairs, with a ball each, face each other one metre apart.
Players take turns to pass their ball to make contact with their partner’s ball.
Scoring options:
the pair with the highest amount of ‘ball hits’ in a row wins
pairs can attempt to beat their own score
the team with the highest number of ‘ball hits’ wins.
Modified small-sided games
It's game time!
Teams play each other in the game outlined below.
Tricky goal lines
Equipment: 1 football per attacking team player, designated playing area, 4 cones to make goals
Forming teams: Students divide themselves into two groups using finger jousting.
How to play: One at a time, attacking players with a football enter the playing area and quickly choose one of two possible goal lines to run over before being dispossessed of the ball.
Organise players into two groups at diagonal points of the playing area.
Attackers line up behind a marker cone with a ball each. The defender must wait for the attacking player to pass through a gate before entering the pitch.
Attackers attempt to run with the ball over a selected line before being dispossessed of the ball.
Scoring:
one point = the attacker runs the ball over a goal line
bonus point = the attacker scores a goal.
Swap roles when all attackers have had a turn or after each play.
Reflection
2 stars and a wish
Ask students - what are 2 things you feel you did well today?
What are you going to try and improve on next week?
Students can answer reflection questions as a whole class, small group or in pairs.
