Gala day events
Fast start
Small-sided games
In the week prior to the gala-day, students may be given time to create signs to support their team at the gala-day.
Set-up playing area prior to the session..
Players participate in the games as a team.
Select a student from each team to be the team captain for the gala-day.
Fast start - Upside down
Equipment: 8 markers (to set out playing area), 4 markers (to set out the river).
How to play:
Set out the playing area (25 students = approximately 25m x 25m).
Divide students into two groups called 'builders' and 'bulldozers'.
Each student places 1 or 2 markers out in the playing space.
Builders place the markers the right way up and bulldozers place them upside down.
Students return to their baseline (group zone) at each end of the playing area.
On the teacher's signal, all students race to turn the markers over to their designated side.
Students can only turn over one marker at a time and then return to their zone before moving to turn over another.
The game continues for a set time until the teacher signals the end of the round.
The markers are tallied for each team and then reset to commence again.
The aim is for each team to have as many markers as possible positioned in their favour at the end of the allocated time.
Small sided games
Names
Skill focus: Catch
Equipment: A playing area big enough for the circles of players, one medium-sized ball per group
How to play: Players in a circle throw a ball to other players in the circle. An interceptor inside the circle tries to intercept the ball. Only the interceptor can move.
Players on the circles can’t move.
The player throwing the ball calls out a name (the receiver) and passes the ball to that player.
If the ball is intercepted, the thrower changes places with the interceptor, or change after 4 throws.
Keep up the ball
Equipment: 16 marker cones to mark out a flat, square (15m x 15m) playing area for each team, 4 large balls, pencil and paper per team
How to play: A team of players try to keep a ball off the ground by passing it to each other.
Each team begins in their own playing area.
Teams count how many consecutive passes without the ball touching the ground they can do.
Team leader records number of consecutive passes.
The team with the most passes after 10 minutes wins.
Reflection
2 stars and a wish
Ask students - what are 2 things you feel you did well today?
What will you take away from the Net and court games that you can use for our next sport?
Students can answer reflection questions as a whole class, small group or in pairs.
