About the skill
Hopping is a continuous rhythmical locomotor skill, characterised by taking off and landing on the same foot. It is used in many dance forms, in athletics in the triple jump and in many playground games, such as hopscotch. It is a good indicator of being able to maintain balance while moving, which is often referred to as dynamic balance.
There are 5 components of the hop. The components of the hop can be classified as either:
Introductory components
These are the focus from Kindergarten to Year 2.
These are marked in bold in Active start.
Fine tuning components
Only become a focus once students are proficient in the introductory components.
Students should be provided explicit instruction on these componenets once introductory components have been observed in the Active start assessment.
