As we wrap up another exciting week at CTEC, we would like to take a moment to celebrate the incredible learning experiences our students and staff engaged in and share what’s ahead for next week.
This past week, our carpentry students continued their hands-on work, building and finishing the playhouse for Southdowns Pre-K Center. We also welcomed Dana Schlotterer from YEA of Baton Rouge, who shared valuable opportunities for students to explore and train in entrepreneurship.
We were honored to host a tour with the Delta Regional Authority and representatives Joshua McNemar, Christine Williams, Sea Talantis, and April Hawthorne with BRNEED. Meanwhile, our Medical students researched and presented on influential African American figures in medicine, highlighting the impact of these pioneers in the field.
Our instructors engaged in our PLC focused on student engagement, ensuring that we continue refining our instructional practices. Additionally, Tara High School visited twice for field trips, and many of our students, along with several EBR high schools, attended the We Work the Waterways event, gaining exposure to maritime careers and industry insights.

Career and Technical Education around the District!
"I immigrated to the US from Russia when I was 10 years old. I cannot express the wave of relief and excitement I felt after receiving this award. This scholarship allowed me to pursue an education and career in my chosen field of Marine Systems, transition my mechanic’s skill set to a life at sea, and learn to repair and maintain vessels, keeping them afloat and safe. I was able to do all this without burdening my life with a mountain of student debt."

Open Waters Louisiana and "We Work the Waterways" collaborated on Wednesday to host an event for teenagers interested in exploring maritime careers. The event welcomed over 200 students from Baton Rouge area high schools and included participation from members of the legislature and the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority.
Led by the Crescent River Port Pilots' Association and the New Orleans Baton Rouge Steamship Pilots Association, the Open Waters initiative aims to expand access to maritime industry job opportunities while educating the public about the field.
For the second consecutive year, 200 students from the East Baton Rouge Parish School System (EBRPSS) will gain firsthand experience in the maritime industry through the "We Work the Waterways" field trip. Scheduled for February 12 from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., the event will take place at the Water Institute and Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority Museum.
Students will engage in interactive tours, hear from industry professionals, and explore the diverse career opportunities within Louisiana’s water economy. This initiative is a key component of EBRPSS’s Workforce Development Program, which connects students with real-world experiences to prepare them for success beyond high school.
“This hands-on experience aligns with our commitment to workforce development and ensures our students are aware of the many opportunities available in Louisiana’s thriving water economy,” said EBR Schools Superintendent LaMont Cole.
LTC Morrison & CSM Wheeler: On 11 February, CSM(R) James Wheeler hosted the first “Tara Talk Tuesday” for the Boys to Men mentorship club. This club was established by CSM(R) Wheeler to provide an outlet for young men to discuss issues they face as well as to provide a venue for mentorship. The club meets twice a month and on the first Tuesday of the month, they dress in business attire and have lunch as a group.
We are looking for businesses to participate in our Summer 2025 and Fall/Spring 25/26 Internship "Learn and Earn" Program.
