Term 1

Week 9

28 March 2024

Kia ora, EBIS Whānau

We’ve made it to Easter. Just a quick reminder that the Easter break for schools is Good Friday, Easter Monday and Tuesday (2 April).

It feels like the last two weeks have really taken off as WRISSA sports have begun, Ākauwaiata and Pasifika are in full swing and with beginning of the year assessment now behind us, the classroom programmes are really ramping up.

It’s been hugely pleasing to receive positive feedback about the conduct of our students when they’ve been out and about at different activities. One of our school values is respect and it’s wonderful to see the fantastic people our students are is being recognised within the community due to the respect they show.

With next week being a short week it doesn’t get any less busy and we have a group of students who will be off and competing in the WRISSA Sevens Tournament. Unfortunately, the WRISSA Baseball succumbed to the rain yesterday following the pool play, but again it was wonderful to see the spirit our team displayed in what is an unfamiliar sport.

Our sustainability unit is in full swing and next week some of our classes head out and do their bit for the community with a beach clean up.

We’re also excited as the first class reached their target for our Values Challenge. This is a challenge where each class can earn three points (each week) for demonstrating values in a variety of ways (through wearing the correct uniform, wearing P.E. shirts, tidying environments etc) The target is 20 points and it is a challenge rather than a competition so upon reaching 20 points classes immediately begin accumulating points again.

Room 6 became the first class to reach 20 this year and as a class have earned a non-uniform day to be cashed in on an agreed date with Miss Fulford. There are many other classes on track to achieve their goal within the next fortnight too. Well done to you all.

A big thank you to all of the parents and staff who helped out selling parking for the KiwiKids Tryathalon. For a few hours work we were able to raise $3,300 that will benefit the students at Evans Bay Intermediate.

This fortnight also brought to an end the visit from our guests at Shibuya Makuhari Junior High School. It was a rich experience having them join us at school and share their culture with us. In turn we were able to share a slice of the beautiful country we live in with them. To all the families who hosted we hope you got lots out of it.

School News

Kelvin Fah

After 16 years Kelvin Fah has made the decision to resign from Evans Bay Intermediate School effective immediately and pursue other opportunities outside of the education sector.

Anyone who has worked with Kelvin will know that his range of talents reach far and wide and he has decided now is the time to try something different.

We know that this was not an easy decision for him, as Evans Bay Intermediate School is, and will always remain a place close to his heart.

Over the last 16 years Kelvin has made a huge contribution to the lives of thousands of students through his work in design technology, contribution to sports teams, involvement in school wide leadership and through his mentorship of Ākauwaiata.

The impact of his work and his legacy will live on far beyond his time here as all of the staff have also benefited from his wisdom, guidance, support and friendship.

We are excited for what comes next for Kelvin, and due to his humble nature we have accepted that while he is deserving of a celebration in recognition of his contribution to Evans Bay Intermediate School this is not what he wants. With Kelvin having finished up, the process to fill this gap is underway and we are excited about the opportunity we have been presented with to build on the amazing foundation Kelvin has built through his passion, teaching and aroha.

On behalf of the thousands of students (both current and former), the staff with whom he has worked, and the Evans Bay Intermediate community and board, we wish you all the best Kelvin as you embark on the next phase of your life and you are always welcome back here.
