Term 2

Week 8

16 June 2023

Kia ora EBIS Whanau

Term 2 is quickly coming to an end and after a quieter fortnight, a variety of events will fill the last weeks of the term.

In the last week we have held both the first Maths Madness competition, and the first Curiosity Catchup. Both were very successful. More information on these appear later in this bulletin.

The Term 2 Dudley Shield is finally completed, and after a hard fought final game of football, Room 12 has emerged as the winners. Congratulations Room 12.

Also well done to Room 13 who came second, Room 5 in third place and Room 11 in fourth.

This week we held a teacher/student challenge match, which the students managed to sneak a 2-1 win over the teachers. This was a game with a great atmosphere both on and around the astroturf.

As a part of Term 2’s inquiry, students have been developing ideas and ways to show entrepreneurship. This inquiry finishes next Tuesday 20 June with a Market Day that will run from 3:15 to 5:30. 50% of all proceeds from this event will go towards one of three charities as chosen by the students.  Later in this bulletin you will see advertising posters created by students to advertise the stalls that they will be running on Market Day.

You should have already received an email about this on Tuesday 13 June. Included in the email is a link to give permission for students to attend the event. If you haven’t filled the form in already, Please follow this link to access the online permission form for the event.

Once Market Day is complete, classes will be changing their focus to Matariki, which takes place during the second week of the holidays.

This year as well as a variety of class activities, there is also a kite making competition. The winning class will receive the Matariki shield to hang under their team shield in the hall for the next year.

On Wednesday 28 June there will be the annual tree planting ceremony. This year we will be planting a kowhai tree. Thank you to the family of Mikayla Farrington for this donation.

Also, the school assembly on this day will be themed around Matariki with stories, information and performance to support the kaupapa.

Teachers are currently working hard to complete student Mid Year Reports. These will be transmitted electronically on the final day of the term. At the same time you will receive an email that will allow you to book an interview time to discuss the report with the classroom teacher. These interviews will be held during the first week of Term 3 on Tuesday 18 July (3:15-8pm) and Wednesday 19 July (1:30-5:30). The school will be closing at lunchtime on the Wednesday for interviews to take place.

Cultural Day Workshops

Kia ora,

We are looking at running a cultural day on Wednesday the 9th of August  (Week 4, Term 3). We were wondering if there were any whānau who would like to run various cultural based workshops in craft, dance, food or language.  It would be great to have a community skill led day where students can explore various cultures and arts: tukutuku patterns, making samosas, sasa, to riverdance. If you feel you have a cultural skill you could teach and would be available, please contact strye@ebis.school.nz . We have already had a parent kindly offer to make dumplings with a group and we can’t wait to hear what else the community might be able to bring to the table.

Curiosity Catch Ups

We were excited to host our first Curiosity Catch Up on Monday, with Rob Ngan Woo hosting a wellness session for males.

It was empowering to see fathers, sons, and members of our wider community come together and prioritise their wellness.

A huge thank you to Rob for the work he did on the night, and the work he does in this space here at Evans Bay Intermediate School.

We look forward to offering more Curiosity Catch Ups in the upcoming months, covering a range of topics, and always providing an opportunity for members of our community to come together and connect with one another and the school.

Maths Madness

We were very excited to host Maths Madness, a new an exciting maths competition initiated by EBIS last week. We were fortunate to have support from Century 21 Finance to enable this event to happen.

During this event we welcomed 4 other schools into our library for a some hectic basic facts and problem solving.

Congratulations to the Kilbirnie School Kakapo who won the Year 5 & 6 competition, while it was a great night for EBIS in the Year 7 & 8 with the entire podium filled with EBIS teams. Congratulations to the team representing Uru who won the competition.
