Week 6
30 August 2024
Kia ora, EBIS Whānau
The last week has perfectly encapsulated what intermediate schools, and specifically EBIS are all about. On Wednesday our school hockey team came together to participate in the WRISSA mixed hockey tournament at the National Hockey Stadium. Third place was a testament to their amazing team work, skill and desire. It is no exaggeration to say there was some skin left on the turf after multiple members of our team lunged in desperation to protect their goal. An outcome of this result is that the team has joined the boys basketball team in qualifying to represent EBIS at Toa Whakaihuwaka in Palmerston North. Here they will compete against other intermediate schools from the lower North Island.
Also taking place this week was the NIWA Science Fair. Congratulations to all our participants on their learning and their wonderful presentations. A list of those students who received further recognition has been included later in this edition. The range of topics covered shows the depth of curiosity that exists amongst our students.
Friday saw us come together for the good of the community as we raised funds for Daffodil Day. It doesn’t take a lot to look out for one another, and this is what we were able to do here.
Then this weekend we have two bands who are performing at Bandquest in Upper Hutt. First up we have Brainjuice performing Vampires by the Dukes, followed up by The Rizzards of Oz performing Hey Ya by Outkast and Austin by Dasha. It’s too late for this edition to let you know how they go, but we’ll let you know via social media how they get on.
Of course you’ll all be aware via the correspondence earlier this week that we have been grappling with some challenges as well. We’ve included here some reminders about social media use so that we can all work together to support the students of EBIS in being responsible in this space. Mobile phones have made life so much easier, but they have also made our young people vulnerable. As a reminder students are encouraged to not bring phones to school, must hand them in if they do choose to, and will have them confiscated if they are found to have not handed them in. If a student does bring a phone to school they do so at their own risk and should it be damaged, lost or stolen the school are not responsible or liable for this.
Finally, we want to do the best for your children here at Evans Bay Intermediate School. We want to provide them with opportunities to learn in all areas, Academic, Sporting, Cultural, Artistic and Creative. One of our school values is success, and we want to work with you to achieve success for your children in these areas.
Sometimes students have to stay home unwell, and at other times there are celebrations, family events or appointments, but sometimes students are unnecessarily absent. This may not sound like a big deal but the impact builds up over time.
As we begin to emerge from the Winter weather let’s work together to support the students of Evans Bay Intermediate School to achieve a higher rate of attendance and equip them for the brightest future possible as they strive to unlock their superpowers.
