Term 1

Week 7

15 March 2024

Kia ora, EBIS Whānau

It was immensely pleasing to be a part of the team Kapa Haka competition this week.

The resulting performances from each of the teams were powerful, passionate and loud!

All of the teams did a fantastic job and this made it very difficult for the judges to decide.

Congratulations to Uru who were the victorious team and now get to display the Kapa Haka shield under their team shield for the rest of the year.

Our cricket team have been out at Iain Galloway Park representing the school in the first inter-school sporting event of 2024. They were competing with other intermediate schools in the Max Charles Invitational tournament, an event named in honour of a Newlands Intermediate student who was a passionate cricketer prior to his passing. The team finished the tournament with a record of two wins from four matches which was good for fourth place.

It was wonderful to see such a positive uptake for Brake Fast on Wednesday. It was the perfect start to the reintroduction of the Bike Club, who work tirelessly to make sure that students have the opportunity to ride bikes as part of their P.E. programme and during lunchtime.

Thank you to those parents of Year 8 students who came to parent meetings on Monday afternoon. It was great to be able to connect with so many of you.

It has been a pleasure to host a group of students from Shibuya Makuhari Junior High School in Japan over the last week. During their time here they have participated in a powhiri as well as being involved in excursions and classroom experiences. Having them as a part of our school has been a rich cultural exchange not just for them, but for the students of EBIS as well. They depart on Wednesday morning and we wish them all the best for their safe travel home. Thank you to all the families who have hosted a student during their stay. While the experiences they have visiting a new city, in a new country are always exciting, the relationships and memories developed with the home stay families are always so rich as well.

As we head towards the end of the term we step up the programme with further events. Two things of note on the horizon are school photos which are being held on  Tuesday 26 March and the Easter break. As this does not usually fall within term time it is important to note that schools are closed, not only for Good Friday and Easter Monday, but also for Tuesday 2 April.

Thank you as always for your wonderful support. We are looking to establish the Friends of EBIS group for 2024 to support fundraising and events. If this is something you are interested in being a part of please email Howard on principal@ebis.school.nz

Kia Ora, Evans Bay Intermediate whānau.

The EBIS School Board just held the first meeting for 2024 and we are very excited about what lies ahead this year.

Connecting and building strong relationships, not only between students and staff but also with the whānau and the wider community is an important principle at EBIS. We're pleased that we had a great turnout at the pōwhiri and the picnic and met many of our new student's whānau.

We also had the opportunity to meet some of the new staff. Laura Hayes, Classroom Teacher in room 1, who has just relocated from Ireland. Lily Thomas-Milne, Student Teacher joining James Ruscoe to teach in room 10. Bridget Dixon has returned to EBIS this year and is working in the ESOL role.

We're also pleased that Haley Marsh who joined the staff in 2023 has taken on the role of taking the board meeting minutes.

Another item on the to-do list was the renovations and redocorations of the classrooms. This work is completed now and it is great to see that our students, our ākonga and their kaiako have a fantastic learning environment.

We think that this was a fantastic start into the new school year and are trying now to keep the momentum going. We want to thank our principal Howard Young and DP Paul Chalk and all our incredible teachers and staff for their commitment to look after and teach our children. Also a 'thank you' to the parent helpers who put in the extra effort to keep things rolling.

Camp

In term 2 we will be holding our bi annual school camps and heading to El Rancho in Waikanae.

In the coming weeks you will receive more information regarding camp, including costs and activities, but for now we can share the following:

Camp 1: Rawhiti (Rooms 1,2,12,13) will take place between Wednesday 22 & Friday 24 May

Camp 2: Uru (Rooms 4,5,6,7) will take place between Monday 27 & Wednesday 29 May

Camp 3: Tokerau (Rooms 10,11,14,15) will take place between Wednesday 29 & Friday 31 May

We will be requiring parent help for camps and due to the overnight nature we do require police vetting forms to be completed. As these take a long time to process (something we have no control over) we are asking those who are interested in attending to complete a police vetting form and return these to school with the necessary identification.

Please note this is not a commitment by either yourself or the school that you will attend camp, however without a completed vet you will be unable to.

Please find a PDF of the vetting form below:

The winner of this year's performance was Uru, well done!

EBIS Exchange Students

Honoka  (Japanese student)

Japanese schools have 6 classes each day. 1800 students in total. It starts at 8:30 and ends at 3:20, subjects are japanese, maths, science, social studies, english, art, computer, music, P.E. In Japan, we sit in a chair and take notes. We do not have morning tea or play outside. We do not have a big playground, it is very small, students cannot speak during the class. Special classes are cooking. My school president gave us a speech. I liked kapa haka, drawing, and walking around .

Eva (Host) it's good but then you have to think about whether your student understands that, do you have to grab them from their activity. It's quite cool to learn about your exchange students daily life and what their life was like compared to yours. It's a good experience but I think people are nervous to host a lot of kids this year who didn’t have a place so they had homestay buddys. Basically you make lunch and food for them and they come to SPEC with you and on Sundays they do trips like horse riding, going to Te Papa, the zoo and lots of New Zealand stuff. And if I had the chance to do it again I would. Honoka is a lovely exchange student

August (helper) It's been good. I can't believe she's 15 and the different uniforms are interesting as well. I'm hoping to learn some Japanese from her. It's different. Wasn’t prepared just suddenly an exchange student. Interesting.

Ikumi (Agent)- Loves New Zealand, it's very different, population, transport very comfortable here. Ec teacher (Daycare) lots of kids and toddlers alot, Like everything, like her job. Like EBIS, they don't have intermediate, they have primary, junior high and high school, Whittakers chocolate is the best. I used to like cadbury. Favourite place is Queensgate, she doesn’t often miss Japan.

Mr. Ruscoe: (Teacher) It's been wonderful to show our school values to someone new like Honoka, and it's been great for room 10 to show our school values. People are excited and everyone is excited to have a new face. It's been wonderful for her to see a powhiri, the kapa haka competition and Te Reo Māori. I’ve been so impressed by the confidence coming all the way from a different country and a brand new space.

Thanks Honoka, Eva, August, Olive, Violet, Katie, Marigold, Mr. Ruscoe and Ikumu. We are all glad that the EBIS exchange students came, we are all lucky to meet different people from different cultures and countries.

Design Tech

Just a few weeks ago our classes started to do SPEC. Last year you may have heard of Design and woodworking, well every year it swaps over, Woodworking, Tech, Woodworking, Tech -yeah I think you get the point. This year we are at tech, so far we have been set a task to build an enclosure of a zoo animal you find in the forest (That's for Wao). We have to give it water, food, entertainment, a nest/den, a way to see it but not let it bite. We have the choice of using sketchpad or tinkercad, two very interesting websites. This is not an easy challenge but not impossible. You just have to practise. So good luck!

Design Technology.

This term students have been learning to use 3d modelling applications. As a mini project they have used the applications to create an enclosure for an animal that matches with their SPEC group name.

Students had to ensure they were considering:

Bike Club

Kia ora everyone.

We have recently started up a bike club here at EBIS. Every lunch break the members of the bike club will take turns to be on duty at the bike shed located on the right side of the school near Kimi Ora school and they will be giving out bikes to any students who would like them. Once you have got a bike and a helmet you can ride it on the bike track, pump track, and the mountain biking track.

Things have been going really well so far and lots of students have turned up to use the bikes.

Please make sure you are respectful to the bikes and the bike club members because they have given up their lunch time to give out bikes to you so you guys can have fun! and that you are wearing a helmet. If you don't, that may mean you will get a warning and if you keep doing it you won't be allowed to use the bikes again. We have less helmets than bikes so if we run out of helmets then we cant give you a bike but if you have any helmets at home that you don't need consider giving them to us. We have around 30 bikes in the bike shed. If you have any bikes at home that you don't need, please consider donating them to us, we need all the bikes we can get! If you have a bike send an email to jpool@ebis.school.nz. We also have a scooter in the shed but we would love some more so if you have one to donate that would be great too. Please don't bang on the shed as it is very loud for the people in the shed and please don't play with the lock on the other shed door. And please don't draw on the shed as it counts as vandalising and will not be tolerated.

Thanks for reading

And a massive thanks to Olive, Katie, Violet, Marigold, Elvis, Rupert, Oscar and Mr. Pool for making the bulletin.
