Term 3

Week 6

25 August 2023

Ka nui ngā mihi ki a koutou katoa.

Another bulletin. Another chance for us to celebrate the achievements of EBIS students across the curriculum.

During this Term we are starting to see the first Year 7’s achieve bronze in our Positive Behaviour For Learning (PB4L) rewards system. Several Year 8’s have also surpassed bronze and silver, and have reached gold. These students are consistently displaying the school values of respect success and whanaungatanga in a variety of spaces across the school.

This also ties into the Hope Challenge that has been initiated this year. Students have the chance to be rewarded for participating in the many options that EBIS has to offer which include academic, cultural, sporting and artistic. There is also a community service component to this programme. Students htat have participated in any of the following activities will have earned Hope Challenge points if they have signed up to this with their classroom teacher.

We are at the time of the year when we welcome prospective students in to see what EBIS is about. In the last two weeks we have had two open days and an open evening for both parents and students. Not only has there been a lot of effort put in by the EBIS staff, but also by the students who built or reestablished relationships with the Year 6’s, and those that actied as tour guides during the visits or supported teachers in the various spaces around the school. Thank you to all involved for the whanaungatanga that was displayed in making these days run smoothly.

A Year 8 and a Year 7 netball team represented EBIS at the WRISSA tournament on Wednesday 23rd August. While neither team placed at the top of their grades, all students represented the school with pride and competed to the best of their ability while actively displaying the school values.

The in school section of the 2023 EPro8 competition has just been completed. 56 students signed up and formed 14 teams that had to complete a STEAM challenge. In the next week the best teams will be selected to represent the school in the Wellington Regional portion of the competition.

In the upcoming events list, a team will represent the school in the WRISSA rugby tournament on Wednesday 30 August. Best of luck to all those involved.

Just over 30 students have advanced to the regional competition of the NIWA science fair. These students were chosen from those that opted to create a project and defend their research and experiments to the outside judges. Those who were selected will be taking their projects to Victoria University during week 7.

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori is set to start 11th September. All classes will be involved in a variety of activities throughout the week. Included will be a school wide Hangi that will be cooked an served on Wednesday. This year students will prepare the vegetables during the school day on either Monday or Tuesday of that week. If you are willing to support this with the cooking of the Hangi or if you think that you may be able to support in other ways, please contact Suzanne Trye by email at strye@ebis.school.nz.

We are beginning to draft the EBIS Strategic Plan to guide the school’s direction for the next 3 years. Prospective parents of Year 6 students were surveyed during the open evening and very shortly all parents of current Year 7 students should receive an email with a link to an online survey. Any feedback that you give will help the shool leadership team to select the priorities for this document that guides development across the school.

Have a great fortnight.

STEM activities in Rāwhiti

Last week Rāwhiti classes were looking at structures, particularly tension and compression. Students were given resources to build a suspension bridge. STEM activities allow students to work collaboratively with each other and make connections to real world problems and challenges. Well done to Jasper and Neo for a unique and creative bridge build.

If you have any resources, ie. string, empty 600ml Coke bottles, thick rubber bands, please send them in to Raymond, Suzanne and Pete and we’ll find a good use for them!

Thanks,
