Week 10
5 July 2024
Kia ora, EBIS Whānau
The theme at Evans Bay Intermediate School this year is Kaitiakitanga. The definition of this is: guardianship.
Through the last fortnight there have been many examples of kaitiakitanga that have taken place within our school.
The most obvious example is through the Sustainability Fair which took place earlier this week. Our students not only highlighted the causes that are important to them, but they also did something about it. Advocacy for what you believe in is a powerful tool, so to be able to provide our students with a platform where their voices could be heard was both meaningful and a privilege.
That’s Kaitiakitanga being lived. This is authentic learning.
Today, Ākauwaiata and Pasifika group were honoured to listen to original members of the Polynesian Panthers. While it was hugely enlightening for the students who listened, our visitors commented that the quality of the questioning they received was exceptional and that they felt confident about the future of the country with young people like this coming through.
That’s Kaitiakitanga being lived. This is authentic learning.
As a part of our celebration of Matariki, as is the tradition, we planted a tree this week. This year it was a lemon tree. This tree will be cared for, nourished and will then grow so future students of Evans Bay Intermediate School can enjoy its fruit.
That’s Kaitiakitanga being lived. This is authentic learning.
Our classes are currently learning about cycle safety from the wonderful Pedal Ready team. Cycling offers them independence, but is also a sustainable form of transport. It’s great our students are learning this as it benefits them, the community and the planet in general, but they are also learning to navigate this safely.
That’s Kaitiakitanga being lived. This is authentic learning.
And now we have two weeks where school is closed and students and staff have a well deserved break. We wish everyone a restful break, we’ll see you in two weeks. Enjoy this time with your whānau. We’re lucky during term time, we see your children demonstrating kaitiakitanga regularly. Have a look for it while they’re home from school. We’re sure you’ll notice it in places you haven’t previously because we know that Evans Bay Intermediate students are Kaitiaki within their community.
Ngā mihi nui
EBIS Staff.
What a wonderful jam packed term – from camps to Maths Madness to this weeks’ Sustainability Fair – there is so much happening! As a Board it is wonderful to see the tamariki enjoying all the school activities that our hardworking kaimahi spend hours (often in their own time) planning and executing. The amount of effort involved in the school camp alone is staggering but worth it to see all those happy and tired faces get off the bus on their return. On behalf of the Board, I want to thank our wonderful kamahi for all of their efforts. While we are on the topic of events, 2024 represents Evans Bay Intermediate School’s 60 anniversary and we are looking for volunteers to help us plan an appropriate celebration for the community, past and present tamariki and their families. If you’re interested in helping with the event please reach out to Howard and let him know. The only thing left to do is to wish everyone a wonderful and well deserved break, you’re going to need it for another action packed term 3 ahead.
We have received an email from Metlink letting us know that about 10 or more Evans Bay Intermediate students don’t pay their fare when boarding the bus in the afternoon at school.
While these students have been able to ride the bus due to the no child left behind policy, this is not sustainable.
I spoke to the bus students about this, letting them know that if it continues the bus companies do have options they will explore.
It is a privilege, not a right to have a bus stop at the school so it is important we utilise this service properly.
This week represented Alan’s last week at Evans Bay Intermediate School after 5 years as our caretaker and property manager.
On Wednesday we held an assembly to celebrate his time as a part of the EBIS Whānau.
This is what was shared during the assembly.
The online definition of caretaker is someone who looks after buildings. The definition I am going to apply here is someone who takes care of people.
We’ve been immensely lucky to have Alan as our caretaker here at Evans Bay Intermediate School, and though we’re sad to see him go we are excited about your new opportunity.
Every day, you see Alan, he says hello, takes an interest in what you are doing, how you are and who you are as a person. That’s his role, Alan’s a caretaker.
Whether he’s picking up rubbish dropped by a member of the public, because it surely wasn’t one of us, or clambering across the roof in a cyclone on a Sunday morning to secure roofing iron and protect our buildings.
That’s his role, Alan’s a caretaker.
At times he’s led a group of students in karaoke, because he loves to sing and loves to see others grow their passion. That’s his role, Alan’s a caretaker.
It may be helping out at Quick Kai to ensure all are fed, or cooking yet another sausage on the BBQ. That’s his role, Alan’s a caretaker.
Alan is someone who does the unseen jobs, the unspoken jobs, the jobs so stomach churning we don’t want to know about. That’s his role, Alan’s a caretaker
Alan’s here first thing in the morning, all through the holidays, and often will pop in late at night or over the weekend to ensure our school is safe. That’s his role, Alan’s a caretaker.
Alan has been a huge support to so many of us, someone who offers wisdom and advice, someone who willingly offers their friendship, without expecting anything in return, enjoys a good laugh, cooks a magnificent apple pie simply because it’s a random Wintery Wednesday, and is never to busy to share his time with us.
That’s not Alan’s role as a caretaker, that is the sign of the wonderful person he is.
In honour of Matariki a new lemon tree was planted at EBIS. Paul and Alan carefully prepared the site whilst a group of students said a karakia and watched the planting of the tree. We also celebrated Matariki by holding a class Kite making competition and continuing our Matariki focused Te Reo programme through Te Puna.
Mānawa maiea te putanga o Matariki
Mānawa maiea te ariki o te rangi
Mānawa maiea te Mātahi o te Tau
Whano, whano
Haramai te toki ata huakirangi
Haumi e Hui e Tāiki e!
Celebrate the rising of Matariki
Celebrate the lord of the skies
Celebrate the new year
Unite, unite
And bring forth the dawn
Together In union
We are one!
This week we held a hugely successful and enjoyable Sustainability Fair.
This was an opportunity to showcase the learning that had taken place through our enquiry unit.
The first part of the unit saw the students learning about sustainability, what is endanger and needs to be sustained, before they branched off and focused on an area about which they were passionate.
Thank you to all who attended. It was great to have you along to share in the students' success.
