Week 8
16 September 2024
Kia ora, EBIS Whānau
The last fortnight has been an emotional rollercoaster, but nonetheless an important period for Evans Bay Intermediate School.
Over the last fortnight there have been multiple times where we have connected with others in the community. Building strong relationships within the community has been a focus for EBIS over the last few years and it is one we are pleased to be experiencing some success. Whether it is with other schools or with community groups, it’s exciting to be building these strong connections.
Another focus in recent times has been understanding that we are all connected through our time at Evans Bay Intermediate and to truly understand this connection we need to appreciate and understand those who wore our uniform before us. That is why it was so important that we came together as a school to remember the life of Amanda Crook Barker who passed away in 2012 while she was a student at EBIS. Every student who enters our school matters, every student deserves the chance to create memories, build friendships, try new things and grow as a person. Amanda Crook Barker mattered and she forever lives on in our memories.
We are currently in the process of accepting enrolments for 2025. One of the reasons to attend an intermediate school (specifically Evans Bay Intermediate School) is the opportunities that aren’t available at other schools. One such opportunity is Waiata Mai, the annual showcase of song, exclusively for intermediate schools in the Wellington region. EBIS hosted this last week and it was a hugely successful event. Our nine piece singing group sang three songs, Lovely by Billie Eilish, Someone You Loved by Lewis Capaldi and A Million Years from the movie The Greatest Showman. They harmonised beautifully and deserved the ovation they got as a recognition of how hard they had worked, the fact they were the smallest group performing, but most of all how good they sounded.
Waiata Mai is one of six exclusive intermediate celebrations along with: Spell It Out, The Speech Showcase, Pasifika Festival, Intermediates Rock and the Kapa Haka Festival. These events provide students the opportunity to participate with other schools in non sporting celebrations, as well as experience success in their chosen pursuits.
There are just two weeks left in this term and we encourage all of our students to make the most of the next fortnight, before they earn a well deserved chance to recuperate.

We intend to gather vegetables for a whole school hāngi to celebrate Te Wiki. We are hoping to receive donations on the morning of Tuesday the 17th of September or Wednesday the 18th of September (or prior if you believe the vegetables will last). The hāngi will be on Thursday the 19th of September and our Akauwaiata group will be preparing the vegetables the day prior (hence needing the vegetables by Wednesday the 18th).
Each team has been assigned different vegetables to bring
Potatoes or Kumara (Uru)
Pumpkin and Potatoes (Tokerau)
Cabbage and Carrot (Rāwhiti)
Large containers we could store vegetables in e.g. ice-cream containers
If you are in a position to donate it would be greatly appreciated. Please also bring a fork and something for the student to eat the hāngi off e.g. a lunchbox, lid, or plate ready for the hāngi on Thursday the 19th.
If any caregivers are keen to help the Akauwaiata group prepare vegetables on Wednesday the 18th of September please let skadlec@ebis.school.nz. The vegetable preparation sessions will be 9.30-10.30am, 11.30-12.30am, and 1.40-2.55 in the Foods Room. You can attend as many or as few sessions as you like.
Thank you for all your support.
Some days you can be a part of something special. That was the case when our nine Zeal singers were a part of Waiata Mai hosted at EBIS, last Friday.
Six intermediates from around the region joined together to celebrate song. There was waiata, contemporary, the occasional double up and rap, and that's before all six schools joined together to sing Whakataka Te Hau.
It was a joyous occasion and a special event for all involved.
This week on Tuesday 3 September was the anniversary of the passing of Amanda Crook Barker, who was a student of Evans Bay Intermediate School at this time.
Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate but on Wednesday morning the whole school gathered by the plaque which is placed within the school to remember her.
The ceremony began with the members of Ākauwaiata singing a beautiful waiata, I Te Pō. After this Mr Young spoke sharing the following words:
"Yesterday was the 12 Year anniversary of Amanda Crook Barker’s passing.
At the time she was a student of Evans Bay Intermediate School and she lived the values of our school. We reflect this each year with the presentation of the Amanda Crook Barker Citizenship Cup.
Yesterday a former staff member who was working here 12 years ago shared her reflections with me:
“Two weeks before she passed away she was in the office on morning tea duty. I remember the sun caught her hair and it turned gold. I said to her “ what beautiful hair you have got”, she turned and smiled and said thank you.
After she passed for the next few days the students filled the courts with lovely messages written in colourful chalk. We hosted the funeral in the school hall the following Saturday which was lovely as the students were able to join the celebration of her life”.
Amanda Crook Barker is and forever will be a part of the Evans Bay Intermediate School Whānau."
As the school sang Ānei Mātou, our school waiata, the school leaders placed flowers by the plaque as the school reflected what it means to be connected to this school. Finally Ākauwaiata performed a rousing haka, a perfect way to honour an important member of EBIS whānau, never to be forgotten.

Children’s Hospital Annual Street Appeal – Saturday, 5th October
When a child needs hospital care, it can be one of the most frightening times for any family. Our Annual Street Appeal is a key fundraiser and helps ensure that tamariki across our region continue to receive the best possible care - when they need it most.
We are in urgent need of more Volunteer Collectors.
If you can spare just 2 hours of your time on Saturday, 5th October, please consider joining us. Sign up to your preferred location here: https://signup.com/go/WCHStreetAppeal
This is also a great opportunity to involve kids in a meaningful holiday activity that benefits their community - younger children (16 years and under) are welcome to volunteer with an adult. Older students (Year 13 and beyond) can earn valuable volunteer hours for their CV; and it’s a wonderful chance for community or corporate groups to participate in a worthwhile event.

Thank you. We simply couldn't do it without your help!
