Term 1

Week 3

16 February 2024

Kia ora EBIS Whānau

It really doesn’t take long to get into the swing of things once the school year is underway, and as those who follow us on the school's social media would have already seen, our students have been a part of some wonderful learning experiences.

One vitally important experience was the tsunami evacuation drill which saw the school evacuate to the base of Mt Victoria. Due to our location this is an important event and we are happy to share that the students dealt with this in a mature and sensible manner. We thank them all for their cooperation.

Being Summer we have also had cricket on the agenda. In March an EBIS team will be competing against other intermediate schools from around the region so trials are underway to find the members of that team, while Yeah! Girls have been working with some of our female students to help develop some cricketing skills on Tuesday afternoons. Cricket isn’t the only sport happening currently as our students are all training as a part of P.E. for our school Athletics Day on 28 February. This event while promoting some friendly inter-team rivalry will also serve as a trial for the WRISSA (Wellington Regional Intermediate Schools Sports Association) athletics which takes place in March.

Following on from the powhiri, Team Kapa Haka has begun with teams working on learning the school song as well as other waiata, it sounds fantastic to have the admin block fill up with beautiful harmonies each day.

The classroom programmes are kicking into action as well with the inquiry focus for term one and two being sustainability. The overview of this plan is included below.

Here at Evans Bay Intermediate School we believe it is important to have such a range of experiences as we recognise students experience success in different places. While we want our students to leave here well rounded and ready to take on their next challenge it is also important they find their superpower, and we are here to help them to do so.

Finally, an email was sent earlier this week regarding hosting a Japanese student between 8 and 20 March. While there is remuneration for hosting, we guarantee you’ll get much more out of this experience. If you want to be involved please email Howard at hyoung@ebis.school.nz

Room 13

“So far this Term in Room 13 I have done Art and Wellbeing in SPEC - I found it fun. I’m looking forward to Athletics Day - I’ve signed up for everything except the 1500m. My goal is to get as many Merits as possible and to sign up for as many things as possible outside the classroom!”

Walter, Year 7

“We had a Cyber meeting about cyber safety this week - we learnt a lot about passwords - and we had a tsunami drill as well. My goal is to get a Bronze Merit this year”

Blake P, Year 8

“So far in Room 13, we’ve done SPEC - arts and food. I’m excited for camp. My goal is to get Bronze in my first year at EBIS - I’ll do this by doing good in class and showing the school values”

Jerome, Year 7

A great start to the year in Room 13! We have been getting ready for Athletics Day, learning and already showing the school values and taking care of Sushi, our adopted fish from Miss Ryan/Room 13 last year. I am excited to see our students flourish in 2024!

EBIS Athletics Day

On Wednesday 28th of February from 8.45am – 2.55pm, EBIS will be holding its annual School Athletics Day at Newtown Park Sports Stadium. All parents/caregivers are invited to attend and watch their child take part in the day. The events taking place will include track and field events. This is an annual event where the EBIS students have a great deal of fun, competing and enjoying spending time at the Stadium. Families are to remain on the outside of the running track so as not to interfere with the events.

Field events: Discus, High Jump, Shot Put, Vortex and Long Jump.

Track events: 100m, 200m, 800m and 1500m, 4x100m Relay.

Students will pre-select their track and field events. A schedule of events will be available on the school bulletin and will also be posted in classes for students to refer to before the day.

Newtown Park Sports Stadium has an all-weather surface. Due to this, the Athletics Day will only be postponed if the weather that morning is poor. Postponements will be on the school’s social media and sent out by email at 7:30.

We ask that students go straight to Newtown Sports Stadium (the stadium is next to the Zoo). It is expected that students arrive there by the usual starting time of 8.45am. A roll will be taken by your child’s classroom teacher. Please ensure your child is aware of the route they need to take. Students will be dismissed from Newtown Park Sports Stadium at 2.55pm. School buses will not operate on this day. Parents/Caregivers are asked to make alternative arrangements for their students to get home if they normally catch an EBIS school bus. If students choose to cycle to Newtown Sports Stadium, they will need to secure their bike with a chain and lock.

On the day, students are asked to dress up in costumes in their team colour, and support their team. It is important however that they have suitable clothing and footwear for competing. While students can wear face paint, this must be applied at the home and not brought to Newtown Park.

The team colours are:

Tokerau – Blue

Rawhiti – Yellow

Uru – Black

Please ensure that your child has lunch, snacks, sunscreen on and a full water bottle. For health and safety reasons students will not be allowed to leave the stadium during the day.

Students will need sports shoes, shorts, t-shirt, track pants, warm jackets and a sun hat. If students own running spikes (maximum length 5mm) and wish to use them, they are welcome to do so but only on the running track.

It is our expectation that all students will participate in the school athletics event. However, if your child is unable to participate, please advise your child’s classroom teacher by email or a written note. Non-participating students will be expected to support their class and team mates from the stands. We ask that students do not bring valuables to the track. If they wish to bring phones and devices they will be responsible for them. They will be given an opportunity to hand in valuables at the beginning of the day and these will be held at the marking tent and will only be handed out at the conclusion of the day.

Options to host include:

Term 1 only, Feb-April 2024
