Week 2
28 July 2023
Kia ora EBIS whanau.
We are now two weeks into Term 3 and already a number of positive events have happened.
At the end of Term 2 the school was approached by Destination KRL with the opportunity for Toa Ākauwaiata to perform in the St Patrick’s Hall during a local tie into the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The group has already performed twice, once with Lyall Bay School and once with Rongotai College. The remaining two performances will be on Friday 4th August with Lyall Bay School starting at 12pm and EBIS at 12:20pm, and a solo performance on Wednesday 9th August at 11:45. You can check out when other performances are happening by viewing the Destination KRL Facebook page or their Website. We’ll also try to promote these through our own social media.
The postponed WRISSA Boys Hockey tournament went ahead this week. With very little preparation the boys played amazingly to place second overall in the entire tournament. The final was a highly contested game with Masterton finally getting the win after overtime had to be played. Well done to the team.
Four students represented the school at a Wellingotn regional chess tournament on Wednesday 26th July. After a bit of a rocky start, the students focussed and played excellently for the rest of the tournament. At the end of the day the team placed second overall. Congratulations boys.
The EBIS science fair was held on Friday 28th July. These students have been working independently on these projects for the majority of this year. Judging of these projects happened throughout the day and the best exhibits will be entered in the Wellington NIWA competition.
On Wednesday 2nd August EBIS will be hosting the WRISSA Volleyball Tournament at the Ākau Tangi Sports Centre. This involves both boys’ and girls’ teams and additional students for admin and organisation. The tournament will be taking place during normal school hours. Good luck to all who attend.
Also on that Wednesday, the Year 8 A netball team will be playing an exchange match against Rangikura School at 3pm on the astroturf. Please come and support the girls as they prepare for the upcoming WRISSA tournament.
The following Wednesday (9th August) EBIS will be holding a cultural day. You should have already received some information about this. If you are able to support this event please contact Suzanne Trye by email, strye@ebis.school.nz.
Finally, as we get into the second half of the year many of the Year 8 students in particular are beginning to outgrow their uniforms. The upcoming arrival of the Year 8 Leavers hoodies will help to alleviate this for those that have ordered them. We ask that you support us by making sure that students are wearing the correct uniform with no hoodies, makeup or jewellery.
Have a great fortnight.
The EBIS Staff
Kia ora,
We are having a Culture day on Wednesday the 9th of August and are going to have shared dishes on this day. Please bring a cultural dish special to your family that students could share at the 9.30am food festival on the 9th August. It could be anything from scones to samosas but it should be something associated with the students own culture. This is still a couple of weeks away so there is plenty of time to think about it.
If your student has any cultural dress it would be amazing if they were to wear this to school instead of uniform on the 9th of August. They might not have full traditional clothes and might just have something simple that gives a nod towards their culture such as a Tartan top.
If any adults want to run any kind of cultural workshops (craft, dance, sport, singing, or cooking related) on this day please let strye@ebis.school.nz know. We have slots available between 11-12.30 :)
EBIS is hosting a pilot initiative sponsored by the Ministry of Education. The pilot is run by Tanwir Collective headed by our ESOL teacher, Robina Dean. Students targeted by this initiative are those who want to "fill gaps" in their maths and English learning as they prepare for Secondary school and NCEA.
The project started this week with an introduction to the students and their parents, and will operate weekly until the end of November. 25 students are enrolled.
We’re excited to connect the Tanwir Collective with our community through this initiative.
