Week 4
25 May 2024
Kia ora, EBIS Whānau
How fantastic to have the first of three camps completed. Rawhiti arrived back today having had a wet, wonderful and fun time (photos will be included in the May photo newsletter due to the quick turnaround).
Camps are not possible without the following vital components:
Hard working staff, both before and during the camp.
Dedicated parents, who graciously give up their time to support its success.
Children who are willing to embrace new challenges and give it their best.
Rawhiti had all of these, though it certainly helped to have a waterslide, camp grub, a big bonfire, rockwalls, rafts, confidence course, kayaks and a huge stack of crates.
There will be some tired campers over the weekend, but it was well worth it.
Uru and then Tokerau get to experience the same fun next week.
Of course things are taking place back at school as well.
We’ve continued to have amazing support from Tū Mātau Ora with their Ki O Rahi programme and have recently initiated improv drama and singing groups supported by external tutors.
As the weather has got colder there has been an influx of winter illness, please ensure that students who are unwell do stay home so we can protect one another and continue to keep attendance high. Our current attendance rates are higher than they have been at anytime since the beginning of 2023, with 89% of students missing less than 10 days during term one. We would love to see these rates stay high through the colder months, so taking a day or two while feeling unwell can have a massive positive impact not just for the person concerned but across the entire school. We thank you for your support in this area.
Finally, there is only a limited amount of content that can be included in these editions, to get regular updates, images, videos of what is happening at Evans Bay Intermediate School follow our social media channels at:

A few weeks ago, I (Toby) decided that our school needed a newspaper. I thought that after Akoranga had been discontinued, there would be no newspaper. So I founded one. “The EBIS times” is our school newspaper, and it’s still growing. Here are some different points of view:
As a reporter I choose a topic to write about then I email it to the editor and he checks it to make sure it’s okay. After this, I start interviewing people about my topic. Then on Friday and Saturday I sit down and start writing my story. After this, I email it to Toby and he checks and decides whether or not it goes in that week’s edition. (Reporter- Mattias)
The entertainment section is FULL of entertainment (hence the name.) As a staff member for entertainment, I can tell you, it is FUN! You get to draw cartoons, make puzzles, word problems, mazes, word fits, sudokus and all kinds of things! What I do is basically just email the editor (Toby) the idea, and he will either say “Yep, that’s perfect” or “I will touch it up a bit” or “This is completely wrong,”(That’s what happened to me!) Then, he will touch it up, add a few things or just be like: “This is perfect!” and sit there being happy. (Entertainment- Norris)
So what about from the point of view of the editor? Well, as the Editor I can tell you immediately that the Newspaper is something that I have fought tooth and nail for. I had to make the whole first edition in my own time and hold morning tea meetings. But also, getting the newspaper to press was rewarding in a fashion. It felt so good for days and days of work to be rewarded. And it was rewarded. I got hundreds of compliments! It was a smash hit. So from my perspective, the newspaper was hard, but also rewarding, and I can’t wait to see where it goes next.(Editor- Toby)

A Massive Thank You From EBIS
Over the last few weeks we have slowly been building our PE Shed up with some new equipment. The only way this was possible was with the support of the Eastern Suburbs Sports Trust team. On Thursday 16th May, we were lucky enough to have Dean Galt from Kilbirnie Pak’n Save come down to EBIS so that we could officially say thank you. The equipment in the photo is only half of what we were able to obtain. The bags will provide our classrooms with a greater range of equipment to improve our Sports and Health Education teaching and learning. What you can’t see is the trolleys that have been topped up with this equipment too, giving students more equipment to use at morning tea and lunch.
The students that said thank you on behalf of the school make up some of our top athletes across a range of sporting areas; from Sailing to Cross Country, from Trampoline to Floorball, and all of the standard sports played most weekends. Nate Riley, Samuel Farrell, Ivory Hawkes, Ella Macdonald, Liciya Filo-Smith, Sana Wilson and Keninah Vaea have all represented the school with pride in at least 3 different Inter-Intermediate Tournaments.
Thank you to the Eastern Suburbs Trust team from all of us here at EBIS.
These past few weeks we have had Tū Mātau Ora (Pita, Ness, and Aaron) come in to teach us a bit more about Ki O Rahi. Each class has had three lessons with Tū Mātau Ora. We have learned how to play the proper way and learned about the story/ pūrākau behind Ki O Rahi. We had two different teams, the Taniwha and Kioma. There is a competition coming up in June and we have been busy selecting an elite team. My favourite part was hitting the tupu with the Ki (Ariya).Whilst mine was running around and hitting the pou (Taylor). Thank you Tū Mātau Ora, we had the best time.

On Friday the 20th of May all cross country WRISSA participants took a 45-minute bus to High Court Park to compete in 3 km races of up to 100 kids per year (10 schools). The year 7 girls lined up at 10:20 to start their race, after they finished the year 7 boys went at 10:40, the year 8 girls then followed at 11:30, and finally the year 8 boys at 12:00. The course was three laps of the park which equated to 3km and Mr Hart took many ridiculous photos. It was an amazing experience.
Ngā mihi,
Isla, Amy and Marina
