Week 10
22 September 2023
Kia ora EBIS Whanau
We have arrived at the end of another school term.
Students have been working on speeches for the majority of the term. In the last 3 weeks they have had to present them to their class. Speeches chosen by the classroom teacher were then advanced to the team finals where one Year 7 and One Year 8 were selected to compete in the school finals. This was held on Wednesday 20th September. All the speeches were exceptional with topics ranging from The Environment to Boredom. Congratulations to Marina from Room 4 who won the Year 7 Speech Competition talking about her experience growing up in a single parent household, and to Eddie from Room 11, The Year 8 and Overall Speech winner with his very entertaining speech on Laughter.
The WRISSA Boys Basketball have brought back the school’s third trophy for this year. The boys played as a team and with good sportsmanship all the way through the tournament, right through the final where they defeated Naenae Intermediate in a tough match.
The girls team also played well, but were knocked out in the quarter finals.
The Te Wiki o te Reo celebrations were enjoyed by all students throughout the week. Students participated in activities like tukutuku, poi making, and harakeke weaving. The Hangi on Wednesday also went well and the whole school was served in about half and hour. Thank you to Miss Trye for planning the entire week, and for Matua Rob for the Hangi organisation.

And that's a wrap on Term 3!
WOW! What a term! EBIS Science Fair, NIWA Wellington Regional Science Fair, EPRo8…..and to finish it off a trip to Science Roadshow today!
EBIS has an amazing bunch of younger Scientists and STEAM enthusiasts and it has been really lovely seeing the achievements of students this term - particularly at the NIWA Science Fair. It is the absolute highlight of the EBIS year.
Science Enrichment finished the term on a high with some Elephant Toothpaste - and some very foamy drains (oops)! It is great to be able to bring out some of the ‘cool chemicals’ with this very responsible bunch.
We also got to have a little fun in Science SPEC….
Science Roadshow
Science Roadshow provides a great chance for students to explore some of the Physics & Chemistry topics we have been covering in Science SPEC this year. Today's demonstrations complimented some of the lessons we have had and it was awesome to see how many students connected with the hands-on displays.
We tend to host this every couple of years and next year it's EBIS’s turn again!
Thanks to all of the amazing ‘science crew’ of EBIS students who have made this term so much fun! I am looking forward to the Space Place in Term 4 and to hearing how our EPRo8 teams go in the finals on October 12th.

It was awesome to have Sophie Irving speak to a good crowd about her successes and the challenges she has faced along the way.
Thank you to all who came along and listened to her, asked questions and shared in the kai.
5 main takeaways from her presentation were:
Success shouldn’t define you as a person, living your values should.
Find something to ground yourself. In Sophie’s case it was her Māori culture, but it’s different for everyone.
It’s ok to fail if you’ve done all you can to succeed.
The pressure you put on yourself can help you to achieve your goals, but don’t let the internal pressure consume you.
The support of the people around you is what matters most. They love you no matter what.
On 16 October we have our next Curiosity Catch Up when Penny Warren and Megan Glass, registered Music Therapists, will speak about the SoundsWell Singers, a neurological choir they founded who are helping people with neurological conditions achieve success through singing. They are sharing the story of the choir in the lead up to the fundraising concert they are holding at EBIS on 28 October.
It promises to be a fascinating evening. Entry is by koha and if you could please let Howard Young know of your attendance for catering purposes on principal@ebis.school.nz.
Refer to the SoundsWell Singers poster as designed by Shahad.
EBIS has entered into the WRISSA 2023 Swimming event. This is held in Masterton on Nov 15th.
Schools are able to enter 2 swimmers per event and EBIS students will be able to select 2 events.
Trials will be held on Thursday of week 1 with a backup date of Thursday week 2. Trials will be conducted by myself and our EBIS Swim Coach from Taraika Swim Club.
Events:
50m Freestyle
50m Butterfly
50m Breaststroke
50m Backstroke
100m Freestyle
100m Individual Medley
Relay
Note that each of the above events has a boys and girls race. As a starting point swimmers who can swim 1 length of free in less than 20 secs are encouraged to come for a trial.
An email will go out to all families at the beginning of week 1 to remind students of the upcoming trials.
Transport will be figured out when I know how many swimmers we are taking.
If you have any questions about this event please contact me ahood@ebis.school.nz (Amanda Hood).
Kia ora Wellington school whānau,
I’m just getting in touch with some information about Wellington City Libraries’ upcoming programme of activities for kids and teens during the school holidays, Art Through the Ages | Toi Puta Noa i Ngā Tau. From the 23rd of September to the 8th of October, our libraries are putting on over 50 free art-themed events for young people. Highlights include:
A ‘Festival of Ultra-wild Design’ with local graphic artist and maverick inventor Steve Mushin
Getting up-close and personal with extremely old and rare items from our Rare Books collection – some from the 1400s – and learning how they were decorated and illuminated
Creating micro-masterpieces for an exhibition of tiny art at the library
Taking on the role of Michelangelo and painting the undersides of our tables and desks like you’re painting the Sistine Chapel
Traditional Chinese painting, Japanese wood-block printing, raranga papercrafts, and much much more!
Visit our blog for the full list of events, times and locations: School Holidays: Art Through the Ages | Toi Puta Noa i Ngā Tau – Kids' Blog (wcl.govt.nz). Some events require registration, but all are totally free.
