Week 7
Introduction
9 March 2023
Kia ora EBIS Whanau
For the last week we have had Wellington Baseball in the school taking workshops with all classes. Students have enjoyed the different games and drills that they have practised.
For those students who enjoyed and excelled in the workshops there is a possibility of EBIS sending a team to the WRISSA invitational baseball tournament later this year.
The new Akoranga programme is scheduled to begin on Friday 17 March. This replaces and integrates the electives and extension programmes that we have run in previous years. Most students have now made their choices and the groups are being formed ready for this to start. These groups will continue every Day 6 of our timetable until the end of Term 2 where students will make new choices for their akoranga groups in Terms 3 and 4.
As you are all aware on 14 February we had to close the school in part due to the volume of leaking inside the buildings. Since that time we have been working hard with Watts and Hughes (contractors) and the Ministry of Education to ensure that this is not an issue moving forward. We are greatly appreciative of your flexibility when this occurred, but also recognise that it is not acceptable that the roof was not watertight on that day.
The school athletics is coming up in Week 8 on Wednesday 22nd March. You should receive a permission slip shortly with information about this. On the day students are expected to make their way directly to and from directly the Newtown Stadium (beside the Zoo) arriving and leaving at normal school hours. Students may wear clothes, in their team colours, appropriate to compete in on that day instead of standard uniform. The team colours are:
Tokerau (Rooms 5,6,7) Blue
Rawhiti (Rooms 1,2,4) Yellow
Tonga (Rooms 9,12) Red
Uru (Rooms 13,14) Black/White
Ngā Hau e Wha (Rooms 10,11,15) Green
The event is scheduled to finish at 2:55 as normal, and there will be no school buses from the stadium. Parents are welcome to come along and watch.
Students who do well in the school athletics will have a chance to compete at the WRISSA athletics against the other Wellingotn Intermediates on Friday 31 March.
The WRISSA Sevens rugby tournament is also coming up Wednesday 29th March. There will be a message in the daily notices soon for any interested students to sign up and then trial to be in the team.
You may be aware that primary teachers and principals voted to reject the pay offer from the Ministry of Education. This meant that there has also been a vote for whether there will be any industrial action taken by teachers.
If this vote is ratified it will take place on Thursday 16th March. While we understand that this is very short notice, we hope that you will continue to support us as we ask for the resources and conditions that will allow all teachers to support students in the best way possible.

What is Akoranga?
Definition: Akoranga is a Māori term with meanings that include teaching and place of learning. It is derived from the root word ako, which means both to teach and to learn, and recognises the reciprocal relationship of both processes.
Akoranga occurs on Day 6 of our 7 day timetable from 11am to 3pm.
This is a combined learning time where students from across the school are able to choose an option they are interested in. This allows for a Tuakana-Teina model of learning where students can mix together to learn with students with whom they wouldn’t usually work with from all classes. The time is a structured learning time with a clear plan of the programme and expected outcomes at the end of the time period. In 2022 we will introduce some showcases of the learning that has taken place - we will invite in parents / caregivers and whanau to view these.
Akoranga replaces what used to be the Enrichment and Extension programmes. The reasons for this change is due to the following factors:
Blocks have become 90 minutes as opposed to 45 previously. This is to allow groups to expand their learning in terms of how deeply they can explore ideas, the ability to make more challenging projects, the ability to utilise our local community.
With the transitions now taking place on recognised breaks rather than mid block there is less loss of learning time due to messy transitions. ● The longer time period dedicated to this programme means that students are able to experience more personalised learning than under the previous programmes.
Many of the best features of the previous programmes are retained.
A wide range of options (often outside the traditional curriculum) meaning the students can choose the learning path that excites and interests them.
Opportunities for students to extend themselves and their learning.
The opportunity to enjoy success in areas not traditionally valued in schools.
Through a Record of Learning there will be opportunities for whanau to see how their child is progressing in Akoranga. This is a feature that was previously not the case in enrichment. While this is a way of keeping you at home informed, Akoranga is an opportunity for students to try out new things and to not be under pressure of being assessed in this subject. There may be some exceptions when students choose certain areas, but this will be identified prior to the student signing up meaning they will know what to expect. Activities may identify their own goals that students work to over their time in this activity.
We are always looking for a mixture of student interest and staff being able to offer suitable programmes for Akoranga.
