Week 2
As we come to the end of week 2 the recent school holidays seem like a distant memory.
This week has been a lot of fun as the whole school came together for the cross country. It was great to see the spirit of our students, not only in trying their hardest but also in supporting one another. It really is a pleasure to witness the positivity so many of our students show to one another.
Congratulations to all those students who have qualified to represent Evans Bay Intermediate School at the upcoming WRISSA cross country.
This week also saw our boys basketball team compete at the WRISSA basketball. The team functioned very well as a unit and it was deserved when they reached the final against Hutt. Unfortunately Hutt were too strong in this final game, nonetheless it was a great achievement by our team and one that has seen them qualify to compete at Toa Whakaihuwaka in Palmerston North later this year against the top teams of the lower North Island. Information about this tournament can be found on the Facebook page

There is so much more content to be enthusiastic about, with much of it shared within this edition by the students who experienced it. Happy reading!
We are now at the part of the year where our high schools are making times to come and talk with our students as well as going to visit these schools.
When this is one of the main schools we feed into we will notify you of the dates and times students will be visiting these schools. If the school is one that we may not be aware of, please let the office know if your child will be absent so we all know they are safe.
We are now into our final organisation of camp. It is exciting to be so close to heading away, and the camp promises to be a wonderful fun filled experience for all involved.

Island Bay Marine Centre
On Wednesday morning, Rooms 10 and 11 went on a trip to the Island Bay Marine Centre. We got on the bus. I could see the beautiful, sparkly ocean once we got there. A worker told us to follow him. We followed him and needed to listen to long and tiring Instructions, but it was important to listen when it was finally done. We all got outside and walked down to the rock pool with an aquarium inside a small orange house. Sadly, Room 11 saw the sea creatures first, but it was ok. Room 10 got to see the rocks with small rivers and creatures. Unfortunately, I was too terrified to pick up a tiny sea creature, but it was ok. I just had a look at them. They were so exciting and a bit scary. After a long time, Room 10 was finally able to see the aquarium I was so happy that it was our turn. Once we entered the aquarium, we saw an enormous touch pool with many sea creatures, especially starfish. I wanted to touch one of them, but I was too scared. I just had a look. After a few minutes, I thought about exploring around and saw turtles. They were so cute and adorable that I wanted to touch them, but we couldn't. We could only look, but that's okay. It was still fun. After that, I walked down to the fish, looked at them, and interacted with one of them. As I looked down, I was frightened because a weird-looking fish looked deeply into our souls. I felt scared, so I walked back a bit. After about 15 minutes, it was time to head back to school. We walked to the bus, stepping on rocks and a bit of sand, and then we finally got on the bus and found a seat to sit on I felt so tired and exhausted, and the bus drove us back to school

My Weird Experience
I heard the talking and the steps of all the children around me talking to their friends.
I saw the tentacles, bumps, and spikes of a long black starfish and the vibrant colours of a cushion star. I put my hand in the fishy water.
I felt a weird thing slowly touch my hand. I could barely feel its bumps as it wiggled in my hands. It was a sea anemone.
I wondered how it ate. Is it alive? How does it live? I slowly put it down as it sat on a big rock with the others of its kind. I wanted to know more, but as I placed it back, my time was over.

THE ROCKPOOL
I saw the sea stars and critters crawling around
I heard kids shrieking with excitement of new territory
I heard small fish and shrimp splash around in the water with fear
I felt the ice-cold water come through my shoes
I felt a shrimp scuttle across my hand
I wondered what these animals’ next meals would be and if they would live
I wondered when I would come back to this place

My Audition
My fingers tremble over my shiny brass strings. Walking into the Studio, hearing melodies left and right, I made my way up the creaking steps.
I made eye contact with Mr Barrett. I unzipped my guitar case and laid it on the floor, and then he told me to sit.
I strummed my guitar several times, playing songs that would amaze any artist. When I finished, Mr Barrett's jaw hit the ground with amazement.
“How long have you been playing the guitar,” said Mr Barrett"? “About a year and a bit,” I repeated.
“That's really good for a year… Well, that's all I need from you,” said Mr. Barrett. Then I zipped back up my guitar and walked away with a pleased grin on my face.

IMPROV DRAMA
I felt excitement rush through me
I felt time slip away quickly
I saw kids trying to create stories
I saw everyone having fun
I heard everyone shouting
I wondered if I was good enough

Cooking in SPEC
Foods
You can hear the pots and pans banging against the countertop.
The air is so fresh that the ovens seem like fireplaces.
You can smell the vanilla essence in the air.
The taste of pineapple is stuck on your tongue.
You can see all the bowls rocking and the taps running.

CROSS COUNTRY
I heard “Go” echo across the court.
I heard feet pounding on the ground.
I felt my heart hammer in my chest.
I felt my legs wanting to give way.
I saw kids everywhere.
I saw the end come into sight.
I wondered how I did it.
By Freya, Room 10
The screams from our bench rang in my ear.
“Over here!”
I glanced forward and a hand was flailing in the air next to the basket.
I looked at the scoreboard. 24-25 to them, with 5 seconds left on the clock.
My heart was pounding in my chest.
My sweat dripped onto the ball below.
I swung the ball up the court, and I wondered if we would advance to the next stage.

On ferry, the concessions are available on a child ticket and can be paid for with cash or EFTPOS.
Children are still required to tag on and tag off the bus or trains using their Snapper card, to avoid being charged default fares.

We strongly encourage all students (including Te Hunga Whaikaha Total Mobility card holders) to top up their Snapper cards to ensure they have enough credit.
