Week 6
22 November 2024
Kia ora, EBIS Whānau
What an exciting fortnight it has been.
Celebrating Culture Week gave our students the opportunity to further grow their connection to their peers, by sharing their cultures with one another.
For students to feel safe and able to learn they must know that they are valued for who they are and what they bring to the school. It was wonderful seeing the students dressed in clothing that represents their culture, experience games and activities they are unfamiliar with and sharing delicious food with one another.
We’ve also had a great fortnight in the sporting arena.
Our students have participated in Ki o Rahi, Football with Wynton Rufer, and our Underwater Hockey teams wrapped the season with another tournament victory.
At the final WRISSA Swimming Sports, EBIS placed 4th and were just one point away from a place on the podium. It was a long day heading over the hill to Masterton, but well worth it for all who participated.
As this is being published, EBIS is participating in Te Ora Atamira, the intermediate Kapa Haka Festival. We will have a full review next edition, but as always we are immensely proud to have Toa Ākauwaiata participating in this event with other intermediate schools.
As we head into next week we begin the season of celebrations.
On Thursday evening, the Year 8 Leavers Dinner is taking place at Dragon Restaurant on Tory Street. This begins at 5:30 and concludes at 7pm. This is a chance for our Year 8’s to reflect on their time at Evans Bay Intermediate School and the positive growth they have all made as they prepare for the final steps and join their new schools.
This is always a great event and we as a staff look forward to enjoying the evening with our Year 8’s.
This year we have made a change to the timing of prizegiving. Instead of holding it in the morning, we’ll be holding it after lunch on Monday 16 December. The reason for this is twofold. Firstly, it avoids clashes with our contributing schools and the graduation of their Year 6’s, while it also means we are able to invite the whānau of the prize winners to join the staff for some afternoon tea following the prizegiving.
We’ve recently been holding enrollment interviews for incoming students. While it’s exciting to see what is just around the corner, we are very conscious as a staff that we need to live in the now, and enjoy the next few weeks with the amazing group of students who currently make up the roll of Evans Bay Intermediate School.

School News
Culture Week
Last week we celebrated Culture Week at Evans Bay Intermediate.
During the week there were opportunities for students to share their cultures with their classmates and also to wear clothing that represented their cultures.
One of the most popular activities across the school were the class shared lunches where students got to sample delicious cuisine from across the globe.
Sport at EBIS
Ki o Rahi
Have you ever played Ki o Rahi?
Based on the legend of Rahitutakahina and the rescue of his wife, Tiarakurapakewai, Ki o Rahi is a fast paced, team game with many skills resembling those used in other sports such as rugby, netball and flag.
It’s different to many sports we are familiar with as opposing teams try to score points in different ways from how their opponents accumulate points. The taniwha score by throwing the ki at the tupu, while te oma try to touch the ki against pou placed around the outside of the field.
EBIS participated in a recent tournament hosted by Wainuiomata High School. It was a tough day out as compared to many of the competing schools we were novices at playing Ki o Rahi.
It was a lot of fun and as the day progressed we improved dramatically. In the end we could be very proud of our results which were: Played 4, won 1, lost 3 (with 2 of these losses being closely contested).
Well done to all of our participants.
Mā te kimi ka kite, Mā te kite ka mōhio, Mā te mōhio ka mārama
(Seek and discover, discover and know, know and become enlightened).
Wynton Rufer Football
We’ve been very fortunate to have Wynton Rufer and some of his local coaches coming in this week to take some of our footballers through their programme.
This has been focused on Year 7 students with a few year 8’s added as well.
The programme has focused on the development of the fundamental skills required to develop their game. The old saying rings true, get the little things right and the big things will take care of themselves.
Through the first two sessions our students have shown enthusiasm and dedication to developing their skills.
