Term 1

Week 1

5 February 2024

Kia ora, EBIS Whānau

And we’re off! The 2024 school year is underway and what a fantastic way it began.

A school doesn’t feel like a school until the students arrive and that was certainly the case on Thursday when the school came to life with the presence of the students.

This was followed on Friday with the powhiri to welcome new students, their whānau and staff to the school. It was great to be able to share this moment with each of you and we hope this is a positive experience for you all.

Over the holidays there was a lot of work done to get the classrooms looking ready for the year ahead. Following on to the upgrades from last year (new carpets, lighting and TV’s in each room) this Summer saw the classroom interiors being painted. The teachers also spent a lot of time preparing their rooms and the results are spaces that encourage learning.

There was also work completed removing the old vinyl in the hallways and stairwells. This has been replaced by new hard wearing carpet which is both safer and limits the noise when groups move through these spaces.

There is a lot to come over the next few weeks and to support families preparing for these events we’ve included the term one calendar below. One of the big events we’re looking forward to is the community picnic on 12 February. This event is the opportunity to come to EBIS as a whānau and enjoy a picnic in the company of other members of the EBIS community. This is an informal way of connecting with the staff as well as meeting your child’s friends.

As the term progresses we’re keen to keep you informed about what's happening at school and this will be achieved through the following methods:

We’re looking forward to the year ahead, and we hope our students are too. We know the start of the year can be a nerve wracking time, but it is also an exciting time and the excitement is definitely building now that the students are back.

New Staff

Bridget

Kia ora, I am looking forward to returning to the EBIS whanau this year. Previously employed as a regular relief teacher and RTLB: Resource Teacher of Learning & Behaviour based at EBIS, I have been connected to the school for over twenty years. My two sons also attended EBIS, and I really valued the positive, collaborative relationship with the school as a parent.

Having taught from primary through to tertiary, intermediate is my preferred level of the school and I am a strong advocate for this system. Passionate about supporting Akonga to be the best version of themselves and supporting them in their learning journey is a privilege. Outside of school, I am an aspiring card shark, enjoy keeping fit and connecting with friends and family.

Laura

My name is Laura. I am 29 years old and have just relocated to Wellington from Cork in Ireland. I am very excited to be joining the EBIS team and look forward to the year ahead.

I have been teaching in Ireland for the past 3 years after completing my masters degree in education. I am passionate about working with young people and I feel privileged to have the opportunity to help them grow and develop as individuals.

Outside of teaching I also have a passion for sports/exercise. I was an Irish gymnast until the age of 17, I play Gaelic football, Camogie and have recently taken up a love for CrossFit. I like to throw my hand to all new sports and I believe that exercising the body is just as important as exercising the mind.

Lily

"Kia ora koutou.

Ko Lily tōku ingoa.

I will be joining Mr. Ruscoe in room 10 this year as a student teacher on behalf of the Masters programme at Te Herenga Waka. I have always known that I wanted to be a kaiako, and I have been working with both tamariki and rangatahi - within many different sectors - for a while now. I am particularly interested in working with intermediate-aged tamariki, as it is during this transitional period where exploration and critical thinking unite and where an incredible amount of growth occurs. I also have a special interest in special education, after working as a TA in a small community of students with complex educational needs. I am particularly passionate about the creative arts, writing & reading, and physical education. In my spare time, I enjoy drawing, sewing various items of clothing (and rarely finishing a single one), hiking, bouldering, running, and watching films."
