Lots of fun with modern songs and activities with 'cool' inspiring teachers. Perfect for building confidence in creative children who would like to explore music or take their playing to a new level. Ideal for young singers, guitarists, pianists and bassists. Contact us today to book or for more information.
Based in Kilbirnie and suitable for ages 6 to 15. Ideal for singers, guitarists, and keyboardists (sorry no drums). Great for building confidence and making new musical friends.
Hi, I have a cool home-based museum in Newtown that I run for free/donations. I'm just about to reopen for vaccinated visitors and I wanted to let local schools know about me before end-of-term because it's a fun thing for families to do in the holidays.
The museum is called The One Room Fan Museum, and it's an homage to Lord of the Rings and a celebration of Wellington as the spiritual home of the films. What that means for kids/families is that I have lots of fan-made costumes for dressing up as elves, hobbits, warriors, wizards, princesses, etc etc, along with lots of replica kid-safe weapons such as swords, bows, axes and other fun props.
You certainly don't have to be a Lord of the Rings fan but it does enrich the experience. I opened in September 2017 on a very part-time basis and until Covid (last February) I had lots of visitors, usually young adults, from Europe, Asia and the USA.
Some of the visitors were families, so when Covid came and the borders closed, I decided to make more kids costumes and celebrate my fandom with my fellow NZrs. I now have quite a number of kids' costumes, including some hobbit armour that I've been making this year (I still have one helmet that I still need to finish - but to be honest, I'm making costumes all the time).
Website and Museum Info
My website is theoneroomfanmuseum.nz
This has good info, including the Experience page which has lots of pics.
I'm currently making a page dedicated to families and kids but in the meantime there's a blog page about this already: http://www.theoneroomfanmuseum.nz/new-blog/2021/2/18/lotrenchantskidstoo
And, there's a nifty wee video on Stuff about the Museum that is quite entertaining - though it features adults rather than kids:
Endorsements
Regarding endorsements and references, I don't have any formal ones. But people write in my visitor book all the time and the kids' comments are pretty enthusiastic. You can see comments on the blog page above. And, in another blog there's a quote from a Taiwanese/US family in response to my request to use their pics in my promotions. Cindy said:
Hi Kathy! It is totally ok to use our family photo. We
feel honored! We had such a good time there. It was a highlight of our trip in
New Zealand. So glad we found you there!
Also, if this helps show my bona fides, Sir Richard Taylor likes what I'm doing and has given me some bits and pieces on long-term loan - and he tells me he's planning to visit.
It's a home-based affair and I love visitors. Visits have to be arranged with me (details on website), but that's OK because I'm super flexible and available.
I limit visits to a single group because the Museum is only one room! Visits usually last 1-2 hours and I am always there to supervise - but kids do need to bring parents or caregivers (parents/caregivers usually dress up too, so it's mad fun for everyone).
