Virtual Classroom Management

Display Options for Teachers

Classrooms may look different moving forward as teachers make use of a variety of devices to connect with their students in the virtual and traditional environments.   Devices will vary from school to school and from individual teacher to teacher.  Below, you will find a collection of  possible combinations based on individual teaching style and available equipment.

If you have not used Zoom with your CMCSS account, you will need to do 2 things...

Viewing More Students at Once

On a Windows 10 laptop, it is possible to view up to 49* participants at once.  (The most possible is 49. This is dependent on the processor of your laptop. Newer laptops, like the Dells, can see 49. Older laptops, like the original Lenovos, may max out at 25.)

The settings must be changed in the Desktop Client, not the website, for this to work.

1. Open the Zoom Desktop client on your laptop.

2. Click on your profile picture in the top right corner.

3. Click on Settings below the profile picture.

4. Click on the Video button in the left column.

5. In the right column, scroll down to the Meetings section.

6. Checkmark the "Display up to 49 participants per screen in Gallery View" choice.

CMCSS iPad Basics

Apple ID

Not all schools have iPads.  For middle and high schools, iPads are rare.  There are 2 use cases for school-based iPads - student use and teacher use.

Teacher Use iPads

Teachers who have iPads assigned to them will need to create an Apple ID for work using their CMCSS email.  NO CREDIT CARD will be attached to their work account. This keeps their personal and professional accounts separate.

With an Apple ID that has no payment method attached, only FREE apps can be downloaded.  Paid apps MUST be paid for by the bookkeeper at the school.  They have access to a payment management system that allows the tech department to deploy the app to the correct iPad.

Student Use iPads

All new apps on student iPads must be requested through a technology workorder. Free apps will be sent to the iPads through the management software.  Paid apps MUST be paid for by the bookkeeper at the school.  The cost is the price of the app times the number of iPads needing the app. Bookkeepers have access to a payment management system that allows the tech department to deploy the app to the correct iPad(s).

Wifi

iPads assigned to one specific teacher will need to be connected to the CMCSS-WiFi.  Teachers with those iPads will use their CMCSS email address and password to sign into the CMCSS-WiFi. Once the login credentials are entered, a screen will show information about a security certificate.  Tap TRUST to continue.  CMCSS's wifi certificate can be trusted.

The student iPads are setup on the TechnologyDept WiFi.  This keeps them from needing a new password to be reset.  Only the Technology department knows the password.  If the shared school iPad you are using loses the password, a technology workorder will need to be done. (Technology Integration Coaches do NOT know this password.)

Shared School iPad Passcodes

These are shared iPads.  NEVER SET UP A PASSCODE on a shared iPad.  The only way to fix a locked passcode is to  wipe the iPad completely. If an update happens and the step comes that insists a passcode be added, tap Passcode Options and choose Don't Use a Passcode.

IMPORTANT - As these are shared school iPads with NO Passcodes, there is NO expectation of privacy.  Do not login to personal information, such as your bank or other sensitive accounts.  It is generally harder to remove data from iPad as they are designed to be individual devices, not shared ones.

The only exception for iPad Passcodes are iPads assigned to one specific teacher.  If that person forgets their passcode, they can get it reset because they have setup their own work Apple ID that will text a security code to their personal phone.

Adding Apps

Apps that are FREE can be downloaded to teacher iPads assigned to specific teachers.

Apps that COST MONEY must be requested a different way.  They CANNOT be simply downloaded or purchased with an Apple Gift card.  This is because our iPads are shared among teachers and we are an educational user.

Adding Free or Paid Apps

When a teacher wants to download FREE OR PAID apps to multiple iPads, they will follow this process.

       2.   For paid app requests, follow the process for purchasing apps (see options and

instruction on the Purchasing Apps for iPads through Volume Purchase Program (VPP)

that Chris Goad  has provided) in order to get the code(s) to download the app(s).

        3. Once each week, the bookkeeper will submit a  Technology Work Order and attach:

(This process may take several days to complete as technicians must work around teacher checkouts.)

When a teacher wants to download FREE OR PAID apps to a single iPad, they will;

Special Considerations:

*Teachers may download and try free apps on a single iPad (even a student iPad)

                for review.

*It is preferred that teachers load free apps themselves when needed on only

  one or a few iPads.

*If a teacher needs a free app loaded immediately on multiple devices, (and

cannot wait for the technicians to process the work order) he or she may

  download and install the app.

*Teachers should no longer be setting up NEW ipads using a personal apple id.

*Some older iPads previously set to personal Apple IDs are “grandfathered”

*Administrators may still set-up NEW ipads with personal apple IDs if they choose to do so.

Your Technology Coach will be your guide through this process.  If you have questions about purchasing the vouchers used to buy the apps, you may direct those questions to Chris Goad or Cathy Miner.

Accessing Classlink

Classlink can be accessed on shared iPads.  There is NO need to download the app. Classlink can be accessed in the Safari  web browser.

iPad as a Mobile Document Camera

Like Smartphones, iPads have 2 cameras. When it is first connected to Zoom, it will show the front-side, or selphie camera.  Taking full advantage of iPad as a mobile document camera to show virtual students the same content as the students in the classroom requires swapping to the rear-facing camera.  This is especially helpful for classes, such as Auto Body, Culinary Arts, Robotics, and more, to show real-world content that won't fit on a traditional document camera or need more than a simple still image.

The cameras are capable of more than simple stills and video. There is a Time -Lapse mode that speeds up processes that take a long time by taking a series of still photos over a long period of time and creating a movie that looks like an animated GIF.  This is best down by mounting the iPad to a holder so it is still and when no students are present.

Signing Completely out of Google When Returning a Shared iPad

iPads are designed by Apple to be individual devices.   They are not designed to be shared and checked in/out of a school library.  They store account information for tools like Google.  This means anyone who uses the iPad you returned will have access to your Google account if you didn't sign out and remove your Google login info.  The steps for removing your Google account are listed below and are copied directly from Google's support page.

To sign out and remove your Google Account from Safari:

You can add your Google Account back to Safari at any time.

Note: If there's no Google account on any of your Google apps, your device will be signed out.
