Student Laptops 1:1

CMCSS  provides students with a laptop from grades K-12. It is the student's responsibility to be aware of and follow the acceptable use and care guidelines outlined in the embedded CMCSS document.  Questions about student laptops in a one to one setting should be directed to the administration of the building where the child attends school.  To access the most up-to-date versions of CMCSS policy documents visit the CMCSS page for student laptops.

How to Log in

Students in grades K-2 have the option to log into their devices using a QR card that will be given to them by their classroom teacher.  To use the card, students click the blue and while Classlink icon on the start screen to activate the camera feature.  Then hold the card in front of the camera and wait for it to recognize the code.  The student will be automatically logged in to the device without the need to enter a username or password.

Students in grades 3 and up will log in to laptops using their CMCSS username and password.  Each classroom teacher will provide this information to the students.  The username is the student's first.last name followed by the last three digits of the six digit student identification number.  The password is the student's first and last initials (capitalized) followed by the last four numbers of the student PIN.

Locate Files

The file explorer is accessed by selecting the folder icon found on the taskbar.  This window includes a search area, and several menu options along the top.  Look in specific areas of the device by using the navigation area on the left side of the window.

Locate Apps/Programs

Search (located on the taskbar) can be used to quickly find programs and applications installed on the device or search the web.  Type the name of the program or app into the search area and options will appear in a list as you type with items already on the device appearing at the top of the list and web search results showing next.

Results can be controlled using the menu options at the top of the search area by selecting the type of item including All, Apps, Documents, Web, More> Email, Folders, Music, People, Photos, Settings, and Videos.

Control Sound

There are several ways to control the sound on student laptops. There is a button on the right side of the laptop that can be used to raise and lower the volume.  Another option for controlling sound is to use the speaker icon on the taskbar.  This is also where the sound output device can be selected if headphones are being used.

The third way to control sound is by using the sound function keys on the keyboard.  F1, F2, and F3 can be used to mute, decrease and increase the volume on the computer.

Connect to Wifi

Each laptop is equipped to connect to the internet wirelessly.  If a device is not connecting to the wifi network, it could be in airplane mode.  Use the wifi symbol on the taskbar to see if the device is connected to the CMCSS network.  If airplane mode is selected, click it again to deselect.  There are also function keys that can turn wifi connection on and off.  Check the F8 key on most student laptops.

Frozen Screen or Slow Function

If the laptop is not functioning as expected, first try restarting the device.  Restart can be done by selecting the windows icon on the taskbar, then power and restart.  If navigating to the windows icon is not possible, try holding down the power button on the side of the device until the screen goes dark.  Wait a few seconds, then press the power button to turn the laptop on again.  If any updates need to be run, let them completely install before attempting any additional work on the device.

One other way to get the power menu is to tap the windows icon on the keyboard.

Shutting Down

Laptops should be shut down at the end of the day or week depending on use circumstances.  Closing the laptop does not shut the device down.  To power down, click the windows symbol on the taskbar and select the power icon located just above the windows symbol.  This will reveal additional power options including Sleep, Shut down, and Restart.

Sometimes additional options will appear if there is an update that needs to be installed.  In these instances, it is always best to install the updates and then shut the computer down.
