Trip to Baynesfield - 30 April - 2 May
Our recent trip to the picturesque Baynesfield Estate was an unforgettable experience. From the moment we traversed the rustic farm roads to our serene campsite, which had a panoramic view of a glistening dam, we were captivated by the estate's unique charm.
After arriving, we quickly got to work, meeting our friendly camp counsellors, unpacking our gear, and setting up our tents. With the sun shining, we started with an exciting Amazing Race that had us running, thinking, and laughing through various challenges.
In the afternoon, we embarked on a journey of discovery, walking through the working parts of the estate. It was a fascinating experience to learn how the estate supports the community through avocado, timber, and sugarcane farming. Seeing these large-scale operations up close filled us with wonder and gave us a genuine appreciation for the hard work that goes into producing the food and resources we often take for granted.
As the sky darkened, we cooked dinner and gathered around the fire to chat about the day. There was a genuine camaraderie as we shared stories, reflected on the challenges, and prepared for a good night's sleep, because the next day promised even more excitement.
The following morning greeted us with fresh, cool air and sunshine, the perfect weather for our outdoor activities. After splitting into groups, we tackled an epic obstacle course that truly tested our teamwork and determination. From climbing walls and muddy belly crawls to swinging across water and balancing on tyres, we pushed ourselves beyond what we thought we could do. One of the best parts? Toasting sandwiches around the fire for lunch.
Exhausted but elated, we returned to camp that evening and savoured a well-deserved supper under the starlit sky. It was a fitting end to a day filled with triumphs and adventure.
Before bidding farewell, we stopped at the Baynesfield Museum, a treasure trove of history and culture. Our visit to South Africa's first butter factory was a fun and enriching learning experience. We delved into the art of making homemade butter, explored Joseph Baynes's historic home, and marvelled at a unique collection of vintage farm machinery, gaining a profound understanding of the area's heritage.
The bus ride back to school was much quieter, except for a few gentle snores from some tired campers! It was a trip full of learning, laughter, and unforgettable moments. We returned with muddy shoes, full hearts, and memories that will last a lifetime.
