Proudly South African Stories with a Midlands Twist (and a little help from AI)
This week, our Grade 6 children enjoyed a ‘Local is Lekker’ Creative Writing Day, where they crafted ‘Proudly South African’ stories infused with local flair! Using writing prompts inspired by familiar settings and events—such as the ghost at Notties Pub, the festive Hilton/MHS Derby Day, an abandoned fort in Top Woods, the Clifton Horse Show, and a trail run in the Drakensberg—their imaginations soared. The stories showcased not only their writing skills but also their ability to connect with their surroundings in a meaningful way.
A Celebration of Creativity and Connection
On Friday 20 June, we warmly welcomed grandparents and grand special friends to the Expressive Arts Centre for our very first Senior Primary Grandparents' Day, and what a memorable occasion it was!
This term’s Gr 6 and 7 workshop focused on 3 areas:
Guided Reflection (designed to encourage introspection and analysis),
Emotional Literacy (self-awareness, empathy, emotional regulation and social skills), and
Stress Management, including techniques and strategies to control stress levels, reduce its negative impacts, and improve overall wellbeing.
With Winter’s clutches slowly relinquishing, our ‘Sun Fun’ theme for the day seemed quite apt! Using a stick and two stones, the children learnt how to make a quick (fairly accurate) compass… you’ll have to ask them to show you how. Using this improvised compass, an orienteering task of some description was the next challenge, and the children did themselves proud.
Learning from Nature: Clifton’s Environmental Design Thinking Challenge
This term, the Grade 6 and 7 children took part in a two-and-a-half-day Design Thinking Challenge rooted in real-world environmental issues observed across the Clifton campus. The challenge followed the LAUNCH Design Thinking cycle, a structured and creative process where children explored, questioned, researched, designed, and presented nature-inspired solutions to real problems.
With many of our teachers involved in in-house training on Wednesday 21 May, the Grade 6s and 7s had an incredible opportunity to go ‘back to basics’!
With the Angela Sacco Lapha as our base, we were able to spend the first few hours of the day locked in to study time, or sessions with Mevrou Borgen and Mrs Worrall.
Excitement buzzed in the air as our Grade 4 girls and boys and their teachers set off for their much-anticipated adventure at Nyala Pans, and it turns out the teachers may have been just as thrilled as the kids! With tents to explore, friendly camp counsellors to meet, and the thrill of white-water rafting awaiting, everyone knew they were in for something special.
A Week of Wonder and Reflection
Antoinette McDonald, a familiar face to many, joined the children virtually this week to share her passion for journaling. With warmth and humour, she challenged the notion that journaling is a ‘girl thing’, presenting it as a powerful and practical tool for anyone seeking to better understand their inner world. The children all agreed, we all experience big feelings occasionally.
There’s something deeply magical in the combination of a breathtaking sunrise and a steaming mug of hot chocolate cupped carefully in your hands. It becomes even more magical when the sun slowly lights up the towering mountains, highlighting glistening waterfalls and crevices in an orangey-yellowish-reddy light… and one can fully appreciate the gift of a new day.
Our recent trip to the picturesque Baynesfield Estate was an unforgettable experience. From the moment we traversed the rustic farm roads to our serene campsite, which had a panoramic view of a glistening dam, we were captivated by the estate's unique charm.
This week, our Grade 6 and 7 children took part in an energetic and inspiring workshop all about learning how to learn. Grounded in research from The Learning Scientists, the workshop introduced six powerful study strategies that support deeper thinking, stronger memory, and more effective revision.
Grade 6s Think Their Way to Success
In true Clifton style, our Grade 6 children were immersed in a rich mathematical thinking lesson—full of curiosity, collaboration, and challenge. What started as playful exploration soon became focused, strategic thinking, as children built on each other’s ideas and refined their approaches with growing confidence.
