Down the Rabbit Hole: The Grade 5 Journey Through Alice the Musical
The Grade 5s have had an exciting and transformative term as they ventured into the whimsical world of Alice the Musical. Their journey began with an introduction to the fundamentals of stagecraft and performance—laying the groundwork with lessons in collaborative work, storytelling, and making strong, purposeful choices on stage. These essential skills not only prepared them for the demands of the play but also helped foster a shared sense of ensemble and artistic purpose.
After this foundation was laid, the children were invited to audition for roles in the production. From that moment, they have poured their hearts into the rehearsal process. It has been, in many ways, an intense journey—filled with challenges, discoveries, and growth—but the Grade 5s have risen to meet each moment with enthusiasm, resilience, and joy.
Our lead performers have shown remarkable dedication, giving generously of their time, energy, and emotion. The growth in confidence and ability among these young actors has been extraordinary, and their willingness to take creative risks is commendable. Just as noteworthy has been the grace and maturity of the supporting cast, chorus, and ensemble. These children have embodied the true spirit of theatre—knowing when to step forward and when to step back, when to lead and when to support. This kind of self-awareness and generosity is rare, and it speaks volumes about their character.
In just a few short weeks, the Grade 5s have achieved something truly special. Though Alice the Musical is set in a world of imagination and wonder, the lessons learnt through the process have been very real. Teamwork, commitment, resilience, creativity, and the ability to listen and respond to others—these are life lessons disguised in the magic of performance.
This is the true joy and power of theatre: in making space for others to shine, we often discover that we shine brighter too. I am incredibly proud of the young artists the Grade 5s are becoming and of all they have accomplished in this process. Their journey has been as inspiring as the world of Wonderland itself.
