Grade 6 and 7 Study Skills Workshop - 23 April

This week, our Grade 6 and 7 children took part in an energetic and inspiring workshop all about learning how to learn. Grounded in research from The Learning Scientists, the workshop introduced six powerful study strategies that support deeper thinking, stronger memory, and more effective revision.

Throughout the day, children explored how real learning isn’t always easy—and that’s exactly what makes it meaningful. They discovered that strategies such as retrieval practice, spaced practice, elaboration, dual coding, using concrete examples, and interleaving can make a real difference to how much they remember and how well they understand.

Using these strategies as a foundation, the children tried out different study techniques that bring these ideas to life—such as creating tree maps, using Cornell notes, completing task cards, and working with a retrieval grid. These activities gave them a chance to reflect on which approaches worked best for them and how they might apply them in their own learning journeys.

They explored how the brain strengthens memory through retrieval rather than re-reading, how spreading learning out over time can help ideas stick, and how pairing visuals with words can bring complex concepts into focus. One of the most powerful realisations was that struggle and stretch are part of genuine understanding.

To end the day, the children took part in a calm and reflective wellness session focused on coping strategies and emotional awareness. They explored simple techniques to manage stress, build balance, and stay steady during busy or pressured times—reminders that emotional well-being and learning are deeply connected.

Workshops like these are part of our ongoing commitment to nurturing confident, curious thinkers who approach learning with ownership and joy.
