Dear Parents
After the rush of exams, reports, showcases, music recitals, Grandparent’s Day and everything that is the second term, excited children tumbled out of final assembly and the car park emptied in short order. As the last reports are about to head into the ether by email, calm descends over the campus and Clifton eases into rest and recovery mode. It comes as no surprise that, come the first week of the holidays, teachers outnumber all other professions in doctors’ waiting rooms. They seem to run on adrenalin and diligence in the final week of term, succumbing only once they have seen their charges safely off from school.
Dear Parents,
Clifton children running around on the fields, climbing trees, riding bikes and having fun outdoors are generally in good shape: lean and fit without much extra body mass. They remind me of a photograph of the 1936 USA Olympic rowing team: nine determined young men from ordinary backgrounds who had no access to modern high performance diets or gym programmes and were quite scrawny compared with their modern counterparts.
Dear Parents,
The term “Outdoor learning” is used frequently in reference to the unique education offered at Clifton. Outdoor learning isn’t just a fun break from the school day. It supports academic achievement, strengthens emotional and physical health, and helps children grow their curiosity, resilience, and confidence.
Dear Parents
In my previous life I moved across the quad from the tranquillity of the academic department to the turbulence and passion of sport in the co-curricular department. The change in tone was palpable and momentous and I daresay the same contrast exists, fortunately to a lesser extent, in the realms of prep schools where children really do have to learn to walk before they run.
Dear Parents
The mid-term break has brought a welcome respite from the routines of learning, sport and other school activities, allowing teachers and children to spend valuable time with families and to recharge batteries.
Dear Parents
Monday 12 May was our Founders’ Day and so assembly presented the ideal opportunity to share with the audience aspects of the history, and particularly the founding, of the school, which has now reached the 83 year milestone.
Dear Parents,
This has been another exciting and busy week: The Grade 5 outing to Baynesfield, a busy sporting programme, the Marimba band performing at the Harvest Moon Market, a choir performance at St Annes, Grade 3 Titanic Day, a week-end trip to Mahai, the Grade 0 Mums’ evening, the PA Golf Day and in-between all these, the academic programme forged ahead too.
Dear Parents,
The holiday is already a distant memory as we settle into the routine of the term. Autumn colours are replacing the greens of summer and while we have revelled in the clear skies and sunshine this week, the water table is still so high, that many fields remain muddy.
Dear Parents,
I trust you are well and rested after wonderful holidays with your families and that both you and the children were keen to return to school.
What a pleasure to watch the school spring back into life as the cars rolled into the car park and children headed off to meet their teachers. Their enthusiasm lifting above the damp, cold weather, the seniors looking very smart in their winter greys.
