Trip to El Olam - 5 - 6 May

The Grade one children arrived at school bright and early with their bags bursting, in anticipation for their second overnight trip. We had a smooth drive to Eston, and upon arrival, they all quickly settled in, warmly welcomed by the outstanding and kind facilitators. The sun was out and they were quick to change into their cozzies and head for the small dam, to gather water creatures in their nets and buckets. Crabs, shrimps and a variety of other insects were soon part of the study and the boys and girls loved comparing their catch with one another. The energy was high and they could have stayed there all day. However hungry tummies are hard to ignore and they headed back to camp for a delicious chicken and chips meal to refuel.

The afternoon was filled with lots of team building and each child had the opportunity to try their hand at archery. The obstacle course was a hit and they took up each challenge, despite some having to step out of their comfort zone!

Shower hour happened, but not much of the mud was removed! The boys and girls had seconds and some even thirds of mac ‘n cheese, before heading to the bonfire. A bedtime story and night time prayers were enjoyed before tucking them all into their sleeping bags, in the hopes of a peaceful nights sleep.

Dreams do come true and a good night's sleep was enjoyed by all, even the teachers! This marks the first full nights sleep on any trip for us teachers!

An early morning walk on the farm was enjoyed by everyone, followed by a well deserved hot chocolate. Seeing the sugar cane fields, as well as the sections that have been cut, was a first for many. After a hearty breakfast, they each tried a piece of sugar cane. The consensus was that it was quite hard work to peel and easier to eat in fizzer-form!

The children were happy to head home after a busy and eventful time and can't wait for their next trip in term 4!
