All throughout a student's life, it is burned into their brains that going to college is important if they want to be successful after high school and have a rewarding career. While it may be true that college benefits a career path, it is not a necessity in order to have a successful career.

There are many careers that do not require a college degree, but rather a higher degree of expertise. Although some work is still required to get a job, getting a license or certification in your field takes significantly less time without having a college degree.

For example, if someone wants to become a firefighter, then a college education would not be necessary. Although college is not necessary for this specific job, there are certain steps one must go through, such as training procedures or a class, to show they are skilled before being given the job.

According to Eugene Gold from Forbes.com, graduating from college no longer guarantees a job after graduation.

A college degree does not impress future employers unlike a few decades ago. Employers are looking for experience in that specific field as well as the knowledge that comes with a college degree.

Society today has a lot more job opportunities for skilled, hard-working individuals than there were 50 years ago.

“I believe that experience and skills hold more weight than a piece of paper saying that you studied theories about how things work,” Eugene Gold said.

“It may be more difficult to work in a professional field without a degree, but it isn't impossible,” Gold said.

One of the most common careers individuals try to pursue without a college degree is entrepreneurship. In order to become an entrepreneur it is vital to have a vision, good leadership and sales skills.

“Without sales skills, you simply will not be able to sell your ideas or beliefs to others,” he said.

Gold further explains, “You need leadership skills to be able to motivate and drive your team to succeed.”

“Finally, you must be a visionary because, without it, you simply don't have a dream or a goal to reach,” he said.

While entrepreneurship is not the only career path these skills are needed for, it is the most common among individuals not going to college. Some other common career paths that do not require a college education include trades (plumbing, electrician, cosmetology, etc.), dental technicians, and flight attendants.

While college is important and necessary for certain careers, as long as you have skills and abilities in the field it is possible to have a successful career without a college education.
