Everyone has seen bamboo. It has become popular as a houseplant, table decoration and even a gift. The base of the plant looks like a stick, and the top part of the bamboo looks like leaves sprouting out from the top like a leaf bush.
”Bamboo is an amazingly versatile plant, and with thousands of species and cultivars to choose from, you can find a variety for virtually any situation,” according to Fred Hornaday from Bambubatu.com. “From the oppressive heat to the extreme cold, from towering giants to dwarf ground covers, there's bamboo to meet your needs.”
Bamboo can regrow with a piece of it chopped off, and it can grow into new ones over and over as long as you still have the piece that was chopped off.
The bamboo lives 7 to 10 years as a houseplant depending on how well it is cared for. It is possible that it could live longer than 7 to 10 years.
Some bamboo grow in lakes and others grow in dirt near water. Most bamboo that is indoors is called Lucky bamboo and mostly lives inside the house. Lucky bamboo only needs rocks and clean water to grow, not soil. Lucky bamboo can be purchased for about $30 depending on where it is purchased.
There is a lot of variety in bamboo.
“The Bamboos Bambusoideae consists of 1439 different species in 116 genera,” according to lewisbamboo.com. “It is one of the 12 subfamilies of the grass family Poaceae and the only one to diversify in forests. Bamboo is a great plant for individuals concerned with a green environment. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on this planet.”
