According to Whymnhamcity.gov, “A fidget is a small object (preferably one that fits in the hand), that can be squeezed, pulled or moved around as a child is sitting and listening.”
Fidgets have become more common in different environments to help with a variety of situations. “Fidget’s help people calm down, concentrate, focus and learn better,” according to Pacer.org. An example of this is by keeping people’s hands busy with the repetitive motion and giving sensory input to calm down the person. 76.9% of AEA teachers surveyed said fidgets help students focus in the classroom.
People who use fidgets use them because it helps them. Kids and adults can use them if they have trouble keeping their hands still. People with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), Autism, Sensory disorders, Tics, Anxiety and OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) find fidgets helpful because the movement and sensory input of the fidget helps them move around and focus.
Fidgets help anxiety. “Individuals with anxiety may fidget or make small movements when they are feeling anxious, restless, impatient or nervous,” according to Forbes.com. “Fidget toys give these movements an outlet, which can help calm a person's nerves, relieve stress and serve as a distraction in an overstimulating environment.”
People with ADHD also benefit from fidgets.
“Fidgets give the user an opportunity to give their hands or bodies something to do, and allows their brain to then focus on the task at hand, such as listening to a teacher or reading,” according to Pacer.org.
They also reduce sensory issues. “Those with sensory processing sensitivities experience sensory overload and may find things like bright lights, loud noises or new smells overwhelming,” according to Fraser.com. “Fidget toys can help them calm down when they feel overwhelmed by providing different sensory input.”
The first fidget was called Baoding balls. “Baoding balls are small balls that are most commonly made of stainless steel or chrome, and can also be made of other materials, including marble, stone, jade, wood or plastic,” according to Jambef.com. “The balls can be solid or hollow with chimes inside. The balls can be smooth or textured for additional hand benefits.” They are used as a fidget when a person manipulates them in their hand.
