(Gaze into the future that could've been.)
(Voks is exactly how you’d imagine you pronounce it but I’m not sure about øre)
When one thinks of a theme park they think of fun and happy-go-lucky places full of crowded lines, rides, and people in costumes. Arguably the most famous theme park of all time is Disney World, and I’m pretty sure everyone who hasn’t been there at one point has dreamt about going there. However, what if I told you that there is a place located on the island of Zealand, Denmark that’s infinitely better than Disney World?
Now you may be asking yourself, “What is this place you speak of, and what makes it better than Disney World?” Well that’s what I’m here to babble about today. This place in question is called Bonbon Land.
WHAT IS BONBON LAND?
Founded in 1992 by Danish sweets boiler, Michael Spangsberg, the bonbons were first created when he was trying out some new brown candy. His son Nicolai stated that they look like dog farts. This gave Spangsberg the idea to create candy with weird names like “hundeprutter” (dog farts) and “ørevoks” (earwax).
(Hoondeh-Prute)
The candy became massively popular and children started sending in their own ideas. Such ideas include “blå ugler” (blue owls), “Rådne Fisk “ (rotten fish) and “andemad” (duckweed).
(I think it’s supposed to be pronounced as “Rod-neh but I’m not sure, however “fisk” is fisk.)
(“blå” is pronounced the same as “blue” and owl is “Ooo-luh.”)
(Ann-dih-mad)
The candies became so popular that kids started to visit the factory that made them to see how they were made, but due to hygienic issues, Spangsberg decided to open up a theme park on April 16, 1992 instead .
When Bonbon Land first opened it consisted of a candy shop, cinema, shop and 4 duck boats until 1993 when the park got its first roller coaster, the “Hundeprutter Rutchebane” (dog fart coaster). There is the Whoonde-prooter-rutchy-bain , and other rides include Vandrotten (the water rat). From what I understand the d is silent and Søløven (sea lion) the ø is pronounced like oooh.
Van-rotten
In 2007 Spangsberg disowned his child (more commonly known as “Bonbon Land”) and sold him to a Spanish amusement park based company called Parques Reunidos. In 2008 he got bored of Bonbon Land so he decided that he wanted to make some good old fashioned chocolate instead .
We must save this historical landmark from the abyss of obscurity that it’s currently in before it fades into the even more terrifying abyss of death because there is none else like it. Thank you and goodbye.
I may or may not have gotten the Danish words wrong so my apologies on that.
