There are many animals that live in the ocean. Some are very small, like crabs, and some longer than a house, such as the blue whale. The Mako kids series features two marine animals, the hammerhead shark and spinner dolphins.
The hammerhead shark's head is shaped like a hammer. The hammerhead species have visual fields that overlap behind them, giving them a full 360 degree view of the world according to NationalGeographic.com.
Some hammerhead sharks live in schools. The great hammerhead shark is the largest of its kind.
According to Elizabeth Ward-Sing the great hammerhead is a solitary, nomadic predator and is found throughout the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, as well as in the Mediterranean Sea.
There are different ways to avoid the hammerhead sharks like swimming underneath them, but spinner dolphins swim a lot faster than the hammerhead sharks so it is more difficult for the prey to get away.
According to the NOAA Fisheries, spinner dolphins can grow up to 7 feet (2lm) long and weigh up to 170 pounds (77kg). Spinner dolphins can live up to 20 years.
Spinner dolphins are known for spinning their bodies in the air, making as many as seven rotations at a time. They can spin multiple times in one leap, which can be nearly 10 feet high.
According to NOAA Fisheries, “In most places, spinner dolphins are found in areas of deep waters where they likely track prey. Although the pelagic stock of Hawaiian spinner dolphins are found in the deeper waters offshore of the islands, the rest of the Hawaiʻi population has a more coastal distribution.”
Mako kids series is on Netflix which features these two species.
