Throughout Disney Channel history, many shows have been shut down when it came to the concept of bringing in more diverse stories and relationships. When the show “The Owl House” got greenlit back in 2018, show creator Dana Terrace knew that it would be a struggle to get past certain views from previous television entertainment groups.
“When we were greenlit I was told by certain Disney leadership that I could NOT represent any form of bi or gay relationship on the Channel,” Terrace wrote on Twitter. She had planned from the beginning to have several characters in her show be accepting and more diverse.
“Luckily my stubbornness paid off and now I am VERY supported by current Disney leadership,” she said.
“The Owl House” starts off with 14-year-old main character, Luz Noceda, accidentally traveling to a magical realm called The Boiling Isles and becoming the apprentice to a powerful witch while trying to find her way home. Throughout the show, Luz is introduced to both boys and girls and can be seen having an attraction to both, making her bisexual. Dana told fans during a Q&A on Reddit that Luz was bisexual.
“I’m Bi. I want to write a Bi character!” she wrote.
Luz is not the only LGBT represented character in the show. While speaking on Luz’s sexuality she also told fans about Luz’s love interest, Amity, who is Lesbian. Non-binary voice actor Avi Roque was announced to be voice acting a non-binary character, Raine Whispers during the season two premiere. The show is currently on hiatus, but fans await the next episode of season two while expressing their love and support to the creators on social media.
