A. Negation--La forma negativa non
In Italian the negative form is made by putting the negative form non before the verb:
Non sono uno studente. = I’m not a student.
Non ho freddo. = I’m not cold .
B. Other negative expressions
non…ancora not yet Non è ancora arrivata la posta.
The mail still hasn’t arrived.
non…più not any longer/ Non è più in Germania.
not any more She’s not in Germany any more.
non…mai* never/ever Non hai mai mangiato un cornetto?
You’ve never eaten a cornetto ?
non…niente/* nothing, anything Non sanno niente del film.
non…nulla* They don’t know anything about the movie.
non...nessuno* nobody, not anybody Non hai visto nessuno?
You didn’t see anybody?
non…neanche/ not even Non hai neanche cominciato?
non…neppure/ You didn’t even start?
non…nemmeno
né…né neither...nor Non è né simpatica né ricca!
She’s neither nice nor rich!
*In Italian, double negation is correct and it maintains the negative meaning.
C. The adjective nessuno
Nessuno as a pronoun means “nobody” but it can also function as an adjective and mean “none/not any.” As an adjective it always precedes the noun and can take on the following forms (mirroring indefinite article forms, see Section 5.2),
nessun, nessuno, nessun’, nessuna, e.g.,
Non ho visitato nessun museo. I didn’t visit any museums.
Non c’era nessuno studente in classe. There were not any students in class.
Non ho nessun’ amica del cuore. I don’t have any true friends.
Non faccio nessuna scommessa. I don’t make any bets.
D. Nessuno, nulla, niente and mai can be used without non (similar to their English equivalents), and as such they will function as the subject of the verb.
Nessuno è venuto. OR Non è venuto nessuno. = Nobody came.
Niente è perfetto. = Nothing is perfect.
Nulla è stato detto. = Nothing was said.
*Note that you can only use them without non when they precede the verb.
