10.1. Subject pronouns

Personal or subject pronouns, pronomi personali

The pronome personale is used as the subject of a verb and refers to the person or thing doing the action. In standard Italian the subject of a verb is indicated simply by the ending of the verb, so expressing the subject pronoun is mostly avoided.

The pronoun is generally used only for emphasis or clarity. The first singular person I ( = io) is not capitalized in Italian.
