As we saw above in Section 8.2, bene and male have irregular comparative forms (meglio and peggio, “better” and “worse,” respectively). But for English speakers, this point requires close attention because in English we say “better” and “worse” when we are referring to both adjectives and adverbs; in Italian there are different words for “better” and “worse” depending on whether you are referring to a verb or a noun.
For verbs/adverbs:
Leggi bene. = You read well.
Leggi meglio. = You read better.
Leggi male. = You read poorly.
Leggi peggio. = You read worse.
For nouns:
È un buon libro. = It’s a good book.
Questo libro è migliore. = This book is better.
È un libro brutto. = It’s a bad book.
Questo libro è peggiore. = This book is worse.
The adjectives buono, cattivo, grande, piccolo have both regular and irregular forms in the comparative and the relative superlative.
Sandra è la mia migliore amica.
Sandra is my best friend.
Questi musicisti sono migliori di quelli dell’anno scorso.
These musicians are better than those from last year.
I loro primi primi piatti sono i più buoni.
Their first courses are the best.
Noi siamo 4 fratelli, io sono il maggiore e mia sorella Luisa è la minore.
There are four of us, I am the oldest and my sister Luisa is the youngest.
Questa pizzeria è peggiore del nostro solito posto.
This pizzeria is worse than our usual place.

*The irregular superlatives migliore, maggiore, minore and peggiore, when placed before a singular noun, can eliminate the final –e, e.g,
È il miglior libro che ho.
It’s the best book I have
È la peggior parte della città. = It’s the worst part of the city.
Per la maggior parte, ha ragione. = For the most part, she’s right.
Irregular forms of the superlative These same adjectives buono, cattivo, grande, piccolo also have both regular and irregular forms in the absolute superlative.
In quel ristorante si mangia un' ottima bistecca.
In that restaurant, you can get a great steak.
Da "Peppe" ho mangiato dei pessimi spaghetti.
In “Peppe’s” restaurant I ate some terrible spaghetti.

A final point on other commonly-used irregular comparatives and superlatives deals with the adjectives alto (high) and basso (low).
È una signora di alta classe. = She’s a high class lady.
È una signora di una classe superiore. = She’s in a higher class.
