Comparitives are used to compare people, places, things, qualities, activities, etc. In English we have the convenient word “than” to use for most comparisons. E.g.,
She is taller than I am. = Lei è più alta di me.
Alessia is nicer than Monica. = Alessia è più simpatico di Monica.
In Italian, this comparator, “than,” has two equivalents: di and che. So if you want to say “more than” in Italian you will say either più…di… or più…che…. If you want to say “less than” in Italian you will say either meno…di…or meno…che….
Following are general guidelines for when to use di versus che in a comparison.
“più…di” and “meno…di” are used when comparing people, places or things in relation to one quality or entity:
Cristina è più simpatica di Mara.
Cristina is nicer than Mara.
Loro sono meno coraggiosi di voi
They are not as brave as you.
Secondo me, Firenze è più bella di Pisa.
According to me, Florence is more beautiful than Pisa.
Lei è meno insistente di Roberto.
She is less pushy than Roberto.
Roma è più grande di Firenze.
Rome is bigger than Florence.
Lui è più alto di Elena.
He is taller than Elena.
Mario ha meno cugini della sua amica.
Mario has fewer cousins than his friend.
Patrizio ha più soldi di Stefano.
Patrizio has more money than Stefano.
Hillary Clinton è più ricca di me.
Hillary Clinton is richer than me.
“più…che” and “meno…che” are used when comparing:
1) Different qualities in the same person, place or thing:
Milano è più caotica che bella. = Milan is more chaotic than beautiful.
Raffaele è più ricco che intelligente = Raffaele is more rich than intelligent.
2) Verbs in the infinitive:
Correre è meno stancante che nuotare. = Running is less tiring than swimming.
Parlare è più difficile che leggere. = Speaking is harder than writing.
3) Two people, places or things as indirect objects :
Compro più libri che DVD. = I buy more books than DVDs.
In Francia si mangiano più formaggi che in Germania = In France they eat more cheese than they do in Germany.
Mi fido più di Enrico che di suo fratello. = I trust Enrico more than I do his brother.
Comparisons of equality are formed most frequently with one of the following two sets—(tanto)/quanto or (così)/come:
1) (tanto +) adjective + quanto...
Questa città è tanto bella quanto pulita.
This city is as beautiful as it is clean.
This comparison is often constructed without the tanto and achieves the same effect:
Maria è brava quanto Pietro. = Maria is as good as Pietro.
2) (così +) adjective + come...
Michael Kors è così bravo come Giorgio Armani.
Michael Kors is as good as Giorgio Armani.
This comparison, too, is often constructed without the così and achieves the same effect:
Sorrento è bella come Taormina. = Sorrento is as beautiful as Taormina.
In all of the examples above, the appropriate form of the adjective was used—agreeing in gender and number with the first item of the comparison.

E.g.,
Ieri non stavo molto bene, per fortuna oggi mi sento meglio.
Yesterday I wasn’t feeling good, luckily today I feel better.
Io, invece, ieri stavo male e oggi sto ancora peggio.
I, on the other hand, was feeling bad yesterday and today I’m even worse.
